sound cards??

I suppose it depends how you use sound on your PC; do you use it for things like music, or gaming?

If you don't do anything like that then I'm sure the onboard sound would be good enough. If you game then a good sound card can make a big difference in sound quality, although you can definitely do fine without one.

i use my pc for gaming mostly my mobo is Asus P5Q Intel P45 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
so will onboard do for the sound?

The onboard will certainly do the job but you will benefit from greater quality if you got a decent card and paired it with some decent speakers.

Getting a sound card is regarded as an upgrade, but I suppose it depends whether you want to spend the money or not.

Depends whether you needed speakers I suppose, there's not much point splashing out on a decent sound card if it's just going through basic £7 speakers or something.

If it was me I'd allow something like £100+ for a good card and some quality PC speakers, it depends on what level of quality you want. You could spend less than that or you could spend a whole lot more.

Perhaps a speaker upgrade alone might be a better option?

I agree with the guys above, only get a sound card if you've got a decent set of speakers or headphones, otherwise it's wasted. Onboard sound is much better these days anyway, which should be fine for what you need. I mainly upgraded mines for music and watching movies.

If you do plan on getting a sound card, I'd suggest spending around the £60 mark, something like this

About £60

On board sound is still pretty dire now a days

Even an old creative card for £5 is better than onboard. Onboard is ok so long as your not intending to use it for music, games, films.

Eh? You're talking carp. Onboard sound has come a long way.

I think your talking carp ;)

Onboard in my experience is low quailty, but then if you listen to music, films, and game through a pair of £2 speakers I guess you wont know any difference. :)

So in theory it's no good? lol :p

For £30 or so and you actualy use your pc for audio then I think its the best piece of kit you can put in your pc.

Ok thanks for that.
