Hi,

I am looking at upgrading my CPU from a E2180 to some form of quad core processor.

Currently I am looking at the Q6600 but I am wondering if there is anything coming the beginning of next year which give it a run of its money for around the same price point.

i have also been looking at upgrading but if i went for a 45nm processor would it mean i would have to change my motherboard. i currently have a p5n32-e sli.
also when would be the best time to buy i am in no rush but will want to upgrade before September next year, i am guessing the later the better as there will be new models in stock.
 
Just did a bit of reading and it seems that Intel are going to stop selling the Q6600 in Q1 2009. So guess I should think about picking up one soon.

Q8200 isn't too good for overclocking because of the low multiplier so you would need a good motherboard and RAM to get very far. Guessing with you having the great e2180 (only just upgraded from mine) that you overclock. I was in a similar situation to you but didn't like the idea of the Q6600 - seems old now (....runs for cover:cool:) plus the later ones seem to only be just hitting 3ghz for a lot of people. For quad I think i would have wanted a 3ghz+ yorkfield and thats not going to be a resonable price for a while yet. In the end I just went with the e8500 mainly because it seems to be pretty much the top gaming CPU apart from some very high-end expensive quads.
 
are the 8 cores meant to be out late next year? i think some1 on here mentioned it. think i might just keep with my cpu till they r out, if they cost a load at least the 7i's will be down a lot then ^^

The E8500 is looking like a monster I cant believe they are hitting 4Ghz+.

That's right, it's an old CPU you see and has been outmoded by newer 45nm technology . . .

We are just a few weeks away from the Year 2009 and people are still considering buying a Q6600? your just throwing money away needlessly on power costs, four cores on 65nm production is about the worst power effiency you can get . . .

Dont think intel are releasing much to compete with Q6600 price/performance, altho they are going to try phase it out for its 45nm chips.

Get the Q6600 if you want quad right now for a good price. Feel free to run it hotter and with more volts then the newer Q9550's :p

If you plan on waiting you might want to look at the new AMD Denab, it should compete with all current Core2 quads and may be a better clocker. Obviously this cant be confirmed till the NDA runs out on it :)

All of which are true... however have you seen the price difference lately? You can get a second hand Q6600 for £100 or thereabouts, you try getting a 9300 for that.
(The Q9300 is the chip that is most similar in performance to the Q6600, the 8000 series are slower and don't have VT extensions.)

With the prices as they are right now I wouldn't advise buying any new chips. Second hand is where the smart money is for now.
 
plenty of used 45nm chips for sale if u must buy second hand. For the love of God do not buy a Q6600 unless you are a cash strapped video editor/media producer who needs to squeeze out more work everyday.
 
I wouldn't want to buy a brand new Q9550 (or even at £180 second hand on the bay) when it's almost the same cost as a i7 920, shame about the motherboard and DDR3 costs but it's the principle of the thing. All 775 chips are now old tech and less efficient if you want to put it that way. Go for the cheapest quad or wait for the i7 to be more affordable.

Fair enough if it's second hand and a good deal, but not worth buying "new" Q6600s now, not being old tech and considering the newer ones apparently fail to overclock as well as some of the older ones anyway...
