Probably gonna offend a lot of people here with my music taste but I've developed a bit of a taste for a band call Within Temptation, namely their album The Heart of Everything.

I'm wondering if anyone know of the band, and could recommend something that's along the same lines?

I can't quite describe why I particularly like this band, despite not being really a fan of Nightwish or Epica's stuff which are meant to be similar.

What Nightwish stuff have you heard? They changed their singer for their latest album so their style is totally different now.

I'd recommend the following bands. First of all, even though you say you don't like them, Nightwish.

Elis

Battlelore - Saw these guys live last night, were brilliant.

Visions of Atlantis

Lacuna Coil

This is all you really need to know.

After Forever are quite symphonic I suppose, female vocals, very dramatic stuff. Not normally my cup of tea but I find them to be quite listenable now and again.

I don't think either band will appeal to someone who's just got into Within Temptation. But by this point in a recommendation thread there's no use paying attention to anyone.

Thanks for the input guys, great stuff, will check them out on youtube and last.fm :)

I've come across Lacuna Coil, Visions of Atlantis and certainly Evanescence when they broke into the chart a few years back (did actually quite enjoy Fallen). I've actually got After Forever's self titled album which I quite enjoy.

I think smit101 hit the nail there with the word "dramatic", which is why I really enjoyed Within Temptation I think.

Lysander - still paying attention here, I'll have to check and see :)

It's not so melodic, but very technical metal - Amaran. They've released 2 amazing albums but sadly broke up back in 2005 due to the main singer deciding her heart wasn't in her career, real shame as she was amazing. Here's a few of their tunes:

If you like Within Temptation then you could try After Forever (all albums) and The Gathering (Mandylion, Nighttime Birds).

For something heavier, gritty and bizarre you should try Madder Mortem or Atrox.

I've sort of lost interest in this area of metal recently, so would very much appreciate some recommendations too!

Ok take a look into (off the top of my head here)
angelzoom (examples - cover of linkin park's crawling and fairyland)
tristania (maybe a little heavy though)
xandria
Sirenia (again maybe a little heavy)
leaves eyes
delain (again maybe a little too heavy compared with within temptation)
stream of passion
angtoria (this is definately a darker/heavier option, but in my view equally as good vocally)

and I would definately agree on lacuna coil.

Going off on a tangent slightly - you may like some of delerium's (non remixed) stuff (nuages du monde, chimera) although its not quite so metal as what you're after.

You could try Fields of the Nephilim, they are a bit more traditional goth though (and no female singer). The versions of the songs below can be found on the album Earth Inferno, the studio versions are on the album Elizium.

This is a good post, though I personally think Xandria, LE and Delain are really dull. Also, EPICA are a must.

cheers I found within temptation during a random hunt (I think I found angelzoom first) and then went looking for similar stuff so had an advantage on the topic :) I'll agree that you do have to be in a certain 'mood' to listen to xandria, LE and Delain but you never know the op may like them more than us. I haven't actually got much experience with EPICA but from what I have heard I would have said they could go pretty well too but then again the op doesn't like them or nightwish, not sure which version of nightwish though as the newer singer is quite mainstream and I prefer them this way (although I personally think the blokes a good singer in his own right too)
