I'm off to New York for a week tomorrow and would appreciate some suggestions on what to visit ranging from the obvious (Statue of Liberty etc) to more obscure locations (Good places to eat etc).

Any one have any ideas?

Thanks

shop
visit the site where the twin towers once stood
helicopter flight
become a henchman for an Italian American family
go to central perk and say sill things like "could I be anymore <insert something stupid here>."

(ultimate thanks for the info moment though as i dont really know what to do either)

I do want to have a wonder round central park, and my mum and sister are going to see a broadway show (could be worth doing)

Indeed.

Looks like it might snow on thursday :) Anyone suggest any museums to visit? Would like to try and take in some culture before I end up blowing all my money one alcohol and shopping.

I accept it wasnt the most detailed advice. The subject matter meant my recollection of events isnt all it should be. Its around 50th street or something. O'reileys or McGintys is probably a good bet for a name. Every third round is free if you tip a dollar per round. What more do you need to know?!

• Empire State Building day and night
• Horse and carriage ride around Central Park. Carriages tend to line up in front of the Plaza Hotel
• Visit the Plaza Hotel (Home Alone was filmed here and its where CZJ and Michael Douglas got married, its at the very far corner or Central Park)
• NY Knicks basketball game at Madison Square Garden. Eat hot dogs and drink beer just for the experience
• Toys R Us at Times Square to ride the huge indoor themed Ferris Wheel
• Helicopter Ride around the Statue of Liberty, the one that lasts about 10-12 minutes is plenty
• Century 21 opposite Ground Zero
• FAO Schwartz (toy store)
• Ice skating at Wollman Rick in Central Park. You can ice skate at Rockefeller Center, but its quite expensive, and will be rammed at Christmas
• Go see a show, I've never had chance to but by all accounts they are amazing. I've heard The Lion King is awesome
• Have a pretzel from a street vendor

Came back 2 weeks ago and i did...

Statue of liberty, the whole of Downtown wall street/broadway etc
Went shopping a lot (cheap clothes over there, go macys)
Chinatown
Empire state
Times sqaure (got at night its far better)
Downtown brooklyn, fulton mall is good
Art museum on Central park
Tube'd around Manhatton
Oh and i wouldnt go past Central park (bronx etc..)

Top three sights I saw:

  1. 'Top of the Rock' at the Rockfeller Centre. Best views of the city (better than Empire State IMO).
  2. Times Square at night, plus go see a show (I saw the Lion King, awesome)
  3. NY Nicks at Madison Square Gardens, though you may have trouble getting tickets this close to going.

Edit: Oh and get out of Manhattan if you have the time, I visited the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens which were beautiful, also would have loved to have gone to Coney Island if I had the time.

Nah, not like a donner at all - its more of a shish kebab.

The hot dogs are something else though and I dont usually eat them whilst in the UK.

Check out Modells for good sports stuff. If you are planning on buying loads of clothes head out to a retail outlet mall for the biggest savings. If you are planning on buying jewelery then head out to Long Island. Theres a cracking place in Levitown that offers major discounts on diamonds compared to back home.

In the city Timberland boots are about $100 but I got a pair for $40 in Long Island. :)
