So yesterday I installed my new sound card(Asus Xonar DX 7.1) and I still don't feel I'm getting the most out of it. How do I get music to play out of all 5 of the speakers? I've connected it as a 5.1 system should be ( i.e. green cable in front socket, black in rear, and orange in centre), and changed the analogue-out option on the asus software to 5.1, but it still won't play out of all 5 satellites, and it seems the only way to get music to play out of all 5 speakers is to turn the matrix mode on(which only simulates 5.1 from a 3 channel source afaik). So any help would be much appreciated as I'm not very experienced in this field lol.

If the source file wasn't encoded to 5.1 then you can only upmix the stereo source to play from 5 speakers. Some card do this automatically like mine, Creative have an option called CMSS

I see. but i've got a dvd which has a 5.1 mix of an album and it still isn't playing in true 5.1...

is it something to do with Spdif? I.e. true 5.1 is only possible when you're outputting through spdif... in which case i'm ruined because my speakers don't have spdif-in.

Edit sweary maybe?

You can get 5.1 without spdif. Sounds like setup issues to me, but I don't have a Xonar to give you anymore help than that.

Which software are you using to play the Source?

Its probable it is set to output Stereo and you need to tell it to play 5.1?
