I have a nokia n80 (i know shame on me). The screen has gone and I need to get my contacts and messages off the phone.

Now i do this by using the PC suite. The onlu problem is the phone is set to mass storage mode.

Can anyone tell me the exact key sequance to set the phone in pc suite mode?

thanks

When you say the screen is 'gone', what exactly do you mean? A lot of N80s, including the one I owned, suffer from a problem whereby the ribbon connecting the slider assembly with the rest of the phone becomes loose over time. In the early stages this will cause the screen to go blank or white when you move the slider open or closed and you may lose some of the navigation buttons. Then as it becomes worse, the screen loss may become permanent.

Luckily, the N80 is a very easy phone to disassemble, given the correct tools. There is even a video on how to do it here - http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=GwcqJqNR_QE

I managed to take mine apart and sort out the problem for myself, to such an extent that I could then sell it as working at auction for £75.

Does this problem sound similar to yours?

That is exactly the problem.

It is under warranty (2years) but the repair shop is only onpen 10-5:30 and obviously I work so can't make it for a while.

I just want to get at my messages in the mean time using the pc suite, but my phone is set to mass storage mode.

lol at that video, it say you need about 6 different tools. Interesting though

You don't need all the tools mentioned on the video. All you really need is the t6 screwdriver which you'll find at most small phone shops. All the levering is easily done with a screwdriver. If it is still under warranty, I'd look to repair and sell it in the long term. For now, it shouldn't be too much of a problem getting it into pc suite mode. When you plug the USB cable in, an option box will appear on the screen with a choice of the 3 connection modes. It's just a case of pushing the up or down arrows followed by 'select' after plugging in the cable until you find the right option.

Good luck. Tell us how it goes.

Nah not that easy. Previously i had pre set the phone so it always goes into mass storage mode when the cable is connected. I need to get the main menu, tools or connectivity (can't remember) and change it from there.

Damn it, it just beeped meaning i've got another message.

hmm, can you not get a friend to drop it down to a service centre for you? Mine was in and out within the hour when I got it fixed.

erm, if its anything like my 6600, 6630, n70, n95 or n96 all you need to do is install pc suite, connect your phone via usb cable and once connected simply press your select button (it should be highlighted on your phone as 'pc suite') to connect your phone to pc........after this is done click on 'my computer' and select 'phone browser' which should be listed since youve got pc suite installed. from here you can explore your phones memory, both mass storage and phone memory. find and copy your contacts.

either that or once connected via usb, go to the pc suite on your pc and select 'contacts' you;ll be able to read them all on your pc and also make a back up of them ;)

As above.

Or failing that, from a Nokia N96:

Menu > Down, Down, Left, Enter > Enter > Down, Down, Enter > Down, Enter > Enter (then your options are: PC Suite, Mass storage, Image transfer, Media transfer)

nope. Because in the phone options you can set it to Mass Storage mode, so it always assumes you want mass storage mode when the date cable is connected. This is how I had my phone set up.

I now need to blindly go into the menu and change this to PC suite mode.

I tried the sequence postedby Peño but that isn't right for my N80, i think it opens the demo or something, because i can hear a type of music.

Dunno if you've sent it back yet, but try this if you haven't. I posted your question in a phones forum and this was the reply.....

Open menu then press zero button then 1 then if connected with pc press the central navig button once then press up once then again press central navigation button

I followed this:

On mine, the icon you need is the "connect" folder. To access this on mine, press the swirly button next to the pencil button, move right once, press enter, then press up and left to get to the "data cbl" folder. Press enter twice, press up once then press enter, then press the left soft "ok" button.

got the cable today. tested it with the new cable (phone still apart) and I had display. Put the phone carefully back together and i've lost display (just a white light again).

Have taken it apart again and tested and still no display, looks like this cable is broken too despite there not being any visable signs
