My New Car

I fail to see how a 53 Plate Astra with low mileage is an Epic Fail.

What are you guys who are claiming this driving out of interest?

Seems like a good buy to me. Cheap to run, cheap to buy, low miles (although I know no one here really cares about milage), all in all a good all round car. No its not a 328ci that could have been had for the same price with 100K on the clock, but it is by the sounds of things what the OP was looking for.

Not a great car but a very good buy.

Has he gone for ever then?

7 day suspension due to calling some guys dad a tool for buying a ridiculous car I think.

Oh I remember now. The guy's dad wanted to spend 8k on his son on a car that HAD to have ESP. Which is probably going to be a brand new Corsa.

And I have to agree with Muffin.

because its a vauxhall

and its cool to hate vauxhalls mmkay

It's cool to hate Vauxhall's where there is a better alternative, the Focus is the same price or less, it dosen't look utterly ****, it's not numbing to drive and more reliable. The MKIV Astra.... just look at it :/

The Mk1 Focus is ugly. I could have probably been swayed towards a Focus when I was buying my car, but Ford decided to apply the very same 'design' techniques to the interior. I couldn't stand to have to look at that every day.

Looks fine to me? Personal preference on looks and all that. Oh but wait... Muffin some dude on OCUK doesn't like them :p

I owned a mk4 1.7dti for 2 years and drove a 1.6 Focus on occasion, can honestly say I prefered the astra.

Has anyone driven both cars back to back? Probably not :)

a bog standard looking, run-of-the-mill small hatchback...

hmmm same as the focus then, just different badge. :)

there really isn't a world of difference in them both, sure the focus has some advantages, but isn't it a first car? who cares. it'll do the job and it'll do it fine.

It's a 2nd car, I'm a 20 year old student on a placement year before I go back to University. Ideally I wanted to get a focus but to find a decent one at the same price with the same year of manufacture and all the same specs is pretty hard. I saw this has a test drive decided it was suitable for my commute (25 miles each way) without breaking the bank on both fuel and insurance so I decided to go for it.

Personal preference

That's what it always is a discussion of our opinions.

If you’re not into cars what-so-ever, then no, just like I don't know the differences between dishwashers, but when your do then you notice the little things like the handling, performance, running costs and the horror stories. The Focus has always been a good looking car, the MKIV Astra was not, something they realised with the MKV :)
