Wikipedia Censorship

Does anyone know if any UK ISPs are censoring other websites too? This whole thing with wikipedia may not be their first lot of cencorship, it could simply be the most publicly well known now, but this could have been going on for a long time and with other websites.

On the face of it I don't really disagree with what they've done.

The only question I have is who are they protecting? The girl will most likely be in her 50s, married with kids/grandkids by now. Anyone using pre-teen images for their kicks will not be crawling through Wiki for them...

Quite a few block 4chan, as far as I know.

What's 4chan? (dont want to google it at work if its blocked) The only thing I've seen relating to them was the FBI command center truck with 4 chan sprayed on the side.

4chan is an imageboard. Some places block it because there are porn sections of the imageboard, some ban it because it contains some real sick images. Personaly i think it can be quite funny at times, there is a fair few funny pictures in the random pic thread that started over at 4chan.

that's actually insane. That also apparently turns out to be the ONLY wiki page blocked in my work.

I can view it on the uni internet. Its a bit uncomfortable to look at but hardly in need of being censored by ISPs. If there was obvious public outrage then I could understand why it might be acceptable to block it, but to do it to save our precious, innocent eyes is not their job.

I'm pretty sure Wikipedia are just covering their own backs.

They can host whatever they like on their website. If they find something indecent or think that hosting will make them 'liable' in some way, who are we to criticise them?

Viewable here (3 - 3G). a lot of fuss about nothing IMO, much more stuff out there that should be blocked. I reacon they should just ban anything in Gilly's web history

If OCUK gets blocked there will be riots.

Or at least I will throw a mug at a wall. And the mug will be filled with tea and it will make a nasty stain.

Yeah.

Censorship is bad, okay?*

What's next?

* Yes child-pornography is wrong and all attempts to irradiate it should be made, however that does not mean we should be jumping on the PC bandwagon with our eyes shut.

Does anyone remember Blind Faith's album in 1970(?)? IIRC it had a girl of about 10 naked, holding an object. No idea if it's on Wikipedia (daren't check) but if it is, then I can't see why that isn't banned also.

I've often thought about reporting my parents who have a couple of naked pictures of me as a child in the 70s in the paddling pool, on the beach on holiday etc. It would be sweet revenge after they used to delight in showing the pics to any girlfriends I brought back home.

The internet watch foundation smoke crack, this is not news, they are still trying to get people prosecuted for writing fiction after all...

Sadly it's not just the UK making bizarre decisions.

All this behaviour does nothing to actually deal with the real problem issues, which certainly won't be found anywhere near wiki or any other mainstream site.
