Nintendo Wii for a 4 year old. Too young?

My Grandson(was 2 August just gone) plays with my wife when she puts Wii Fit on.
What are you doing Joe i,ll ask him,to which he replies running grandad, running,he loves it,he plays Mariocart too, though he,s not too good at it,cracks me up watching him.

At the end of the day even if you do get a Wii , he/she will grow up with the console :)

Go get it!!

Yeah of course it is... just wait till he's hooked and then comment. ;)

I see your point, but if its usage is strictly controlled then it shouldn't be a problem. Believe me, it wont get in the way of homework and friends etc. It will just become like any of her other toys.

I couldn't imagine anything worse. I grew up with the NES, even thinking about replacing it with the Wii makes me shudder.

That's not a negative about the console by the way, I think it's a cool little machine with some cool tech, but the thought of it being someones first console is :(

My son is 4 and a half and my dad (his grandad) has one. I let my boy play on it sometimes and its controlled but to be honest he will quite happily turn it off anyway after 20mins or so, he's defo not addicted and would rather be outside kicking a ball to be honest !

I guess it depends how you are with your kids. if they are used to watching TV for hours a day then I would say getting a DS would be bad as they will clearly become obsessed with it.

The learning from it though is great, the coordination of their hands, the way they need to think quickly when playing a game shouldnt be underestimated - i see it as a learning tool as well as a toy.

Maybe decide carefully what games you are going to get ?

my nephew is 4 and uses one - he's better at bowling than i am

doesn't use it excessively, just every now and again!

Exactly, I don't see it as a problem if its controlled properly and its part of a mixture of activities. I can't imagine her wanting to sit there for hours on end anyway, they don't have the concentration span at that age.

Just gone for Wii Sports and Wii Play at the moment with the console and an extra controller set. May look to add Mario Kart after Christmas as that is getting a lot of recommendations.

After 6 months with our Wii we decided to sell it last month and get a 2nd 360 for the lounge.

My 4 year old girl just prefers her pink controller and games like Lips, Viva Pinata Party Animals, Cloning Clyde, Banjo Kazooie and Castle Crashers. She also dances with mum to Dancing Stage Universe 2.

Other than Disney Princess: Enchanted Journey (which we could have got on a PS2) she didn't enjoy any other Wii game and found the controls counter intuitive; the actions with a Wii remote are exaggerated or not quite 'real' i.e. in Boom Blox or bowling in Wii Sport the more you pretent to actually do it for real the worse you are. You have to learn how to bowl or throw according to the rules of the game . Believe it or not this is quite hard to teach a 4 year old. Don't get me wrong, I love Boom Blox, but after weeks she still couldn't play it well, yet she can run around in Cloning Clyde easily.

PS... she loves the Lego games too, as does my best mates kids.

Sorry to hijack but ive just bought the kids a wii and wondered (well i wanted comfirmation really) , is it the 'component' cable thats best to get for a HDTV ?

Your never too young to game !

I remember playing my Commodore 64 at the age of 3. Now if i could figure out how that worked back then im sure your 4 year old on a wii will have no probs at all :D

Question: Is a Wii suitable for a 4 year old?
Answer: My mom is competent enough to load the console, get into a game (albeit simple ones like sports) and handle it well enough for the fun factor to get involved. To demonstrate her level of competence with technology, here is what she calls the consoles we've had in our house:

PS2: Playstationbox/Playbox
Gamecube: Gamebox
Xbox 360: She can't remember the name of it.

Therefore unless your son/daughter is the child that sits at the back of class and eats paste, I would highly recommend a Wii for them.
