GTA 4 - New system?

Gents,

I have been a PC gamer for the last 8 or so years. Now I have come to the point where I need to upgrade my PC again to be able to play GTA 4. I can play every other game but my PC just meets min spec for the game and it really does run badly on my machine. (ok, its hideous)

Now, the question is, do I upgrade my PC (budget of £300 or....do I get an Xbox 360 for half the price of the upgrade and stick with that? I will keep my PC for all the office work, photos etc and some games (C&C etc) are better on the PC, so it won't be totally redundant.

Any thoughts? Or any advice on which PC hardware to go for, if I do stick with PC gaming?

My current spec is

Nvidia 7900gt
Pentium 4 3.2Ghz HT
AS Rock 880 Pro MB
2 Gb DDR 3200 pair
Samsung 19"LCD@ 1280x1024

Thanks very much,

A PC made for GTA4 wont be a cheap upgrade, and to be fair upgrading for purely GTA4 is a silly thing to do, its a terrible console port and most peoples systems suffer running it. Just a heads up for you!

Aye, GTA4 has some issues. However, some people with modest specs are running it without problems, so it's too early (i.e. before a patch) to spec a rig just for this. For £300, if you think you'll get more fun out of an xbox, go for it. It won't get you a full amazing PC spec. In fact, you'll get a decent graphics card and not a lot else. Save your money.

i bought gta 4 from steam yesterday and it runs pretty terrible on my new system

its a bad port. i wouldn't go changing things for this game.

ati 4870x2, 4gb ram, quad core.

The minimum spec for GTA IV is a dual core PC and your's doesn't have one so it was never gone to run properly fella :)

I too would get an XBox 360 for playing it rather than building a whole new PC for gaming, but then it depends what you want to do with the PC. You can get a nice 7xxx Core2Duo chip for cheap and they really overclock...

The problem with GTA4 is when you try and make it run at huge res's.

You have to remember this game was originally derived for the xbox 360 and was only 720p, which is about 1300x768 res i think

i bet a lot of people here are trying to play it on 22" and 24" plus res's, and the game just can't scale that well at the mo.

my mate it running it perfectly at 1440x900 (i think it is) and all the settings are nearly maxed, and it looks great and runs great.

A driver revision and a patch should hopefully sort out the problems, but don't believe everything you read when people say it just doesn;t work on the PC, you need to fiddle with the settings

Another vote for getting a 360. You can get them so cheap now. If you only want to upgrade your PC for one game, when this one game has been designed for a console in mind, not the PC, save yourself a lot of money. To get your PC up to the standard for playing GTA, you would be looking at a complete upgrade, new mobo, CPU, graphics card...the works, around 3-4 times the price of the xbox.

Your system is quite slow now and probably needs upgrading. I went from a P4 3.4 to an E8400 and there was a huge improvement in speed and capability. However upgrading just for GTA4 is not worth it. From what I hear it is a bad console port, if that's all you are upgrading for then your better off with either an xbox 360 or a ps3.

Cheers guys. I decided to get an Xbox 360. I got one with a 20Gb HD for £139. I then picked up GTA4 from a shop next door, aswell as Army of Two and Assassins Creed for £30 for all three(used). All Done, Ive now got it setup down stairs on the big TV.

The PC will be upgraded eventually, but it does everything else with its current hardware. Farcry 2, C&C3 RA etc, so there is no need to change it quite yet.
