Hiya,
Im attempting my first PC build, and after a few reccomendations i opted for an Asus P5Q3 DELUXE/WIFI-AP P45 Socket 775 8 channel audio ATX Motherboard.
I have purchased the following RAM:
Corsair 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1600MHz/PC3-12800

Excited about my new bits i did some more research on google and read a few negative reports - something about 1600mhz DDR3 Ram not working...

Have I made a £280 mistake?
Does the RAM not work, or is it a case of the motherboard isnt utilising the RAM to the best of its potential?

Should i try to cancel the order asap, or will i be ok with it?

Any advice gratefully received - and please try to explain any issues to me like you were explaining it to a 5 year old...

Ta!

Hey m8,I built a system a few months back using this mobo too,And that was the hardest thing about building it,Choosing the ram.

I did the same,Googled it and saw that everyone was having probs too,Now a couple of people had actually said they had got the board working with the OCZ 1600mhz ddr3 (Infact there is a review on the board on here where a guy says he got it working,He just never said how) And that everything was stable with the lastest bios update.

I was still worried at the time just incase i spent money for nothing,So i ended up going with the :

Corsair 4GB DDR3 DHX 1333C9DHX Twin3X (2x2GB) (TW3X4G1333C9DHX)

Which works perfect.

All i can say is don't worry m8,Coz in the end if the ram does not work at 1600Mhz Then change the settings to 1333Mhz (which a read a lot of peeps did) And you should be fine,And maybe try the 1600Mhz at a later date when asus do another bios update.

(I can't really see there being a problem now though)

Hope this puts your mind at rest a little :)

Was is this ram you picked m8??

Corsair 4GB DDR3 DHX XMP 1600C7DHX Twin3X (2x2GB) (TWIN3X4096-1600C7DHXIN)

or

Corsair 4GB DDR3 DHX 1600C7DHX Twin3X (2x2GB) (TWIN3X4096-1600C7DHX)

***edit***Because just to put your mind at rest even more,I just checked the (QVL List) "qualified vendors list" And both ram sets are supported with the mobo :)***edit***

Yea that should be fine m8,Like i said in my previous post,At the most you might just have to change your settings to 1333Mhz :)
Tis reyt m8,I did the same when i 1st joined and got banned for 2 days xD

Coolio. Well, fingers crossed. Cheers old bean.
I'll post up the finished PC when its done*

*when the bloke from the flat upstairs puts it all together for me.

For what its worth I just built a system using that mobo and this ram

OCZ Platinum DDR3 1600MHz EB 4096MB KIT

So far no probs in getting the ram to run at 1600mhz

Cheers,
sombaht

Right... parts arrived and my mates fixed it all together for me on Friday. Worked fine, and we installed Vista64.
For a day or so while i was doing all the updates etc it was fine, then it started crashing. It seemed to happen when you clicked on an exe file, or even defragmenter. Ie, something that suddenly required a lot of resources to run. The screen would just go black, but the tower was still on - the fans were still going strong. In one instance i got the BSoD so at that point i reinstalled Vista.
Again, had a day of no troubles and now its started again - last night i was opening a 4-gb movie file with WMP and it crashed. rebooted, tried again, crashed again.

Ive run ChkDsk, ive opened in safemode and checked drivers, and ive installed all the drivers from the Asus CD.

In the Bios i tried switching the RAM frequency from "Auto" to "1333mhz" but that caused problems actually starting the system - so we switched back to Auto.

Googling the issue it seems that lots of people have similar issues...
Questions

- Any quick fixes you can think of?
- Shall i just retrun the MB and/or RAM
- Is there another good motherboard that runs DDR3 ram? Or should i opt to get DDR2?

Any help/advice welcome - this is my first PC build and im absolutely gutted its not working well :(

Personally, I would return the mobo and RAM and switch it for the P5Q Pro/Deluxe (DDR2 type) and save some money for other bits. Dont see why u would want to go DDR3 on a P45 chipset, increases the cost a lot in terms of both mobo and RAM for little/no benefit.

May be a silly question but do u have the RAM set at correct voltage in BIOS?

Err... how would a chap do that? Is it simple? i could try it tonight...

In the meantime i have ordered the P5Q Pro and some DDR2 ram, so hopefully that will do the job.

But it would still be handy to know how to set/change voltages. Im sure the Asus manual will have instructions on *how* to do it, but is there a *how-to* guide on here that explains the logic and calculations behind it?

Well often mobos have come with default RAM voltage of 1.8v and many ram modules need up to 2.1-2.3v so you need to change it manually in the BIOS. This may have been corrected in the latest BIOS update but to check look for "DDR voltage" in BIOS.

If it doesnt say what your voltage should be on the box the RAM came in check the product description of the site u purchased it from or failing that on Corsair's site and ensure this corresponds to the BIOS value.
