Retractable - Black Widow DIY Screen 85"

Looks great, and that's just the one from Transformers.

Seriously though, looks to be a brilliant setup. Have you noticed much improvement in the picture since applying the paint and was it worth it for the end result?

Also, is the projector loud when in use as my concern over the projector fan noise is really putting me off doing something like this (probably nothing as fancy though)

Major improvement i must admit. i was quite sceptical about the whole thing to be honest but there is a massive difference, the picture just looks much closer to a lcd or plasma now as the darks are much more pronounced.

the fan isnt that loud, not noticable when your listening to something, i was quite surprised its a very small unit and rather quiet for such a powerful projector im over the moon with it.

You should get a hold of an actual test image or 2 i.e. shades of black / shades of white / all the colours. Lines and circles for geometry correction etc. You may find that you can improve what you are seeing beyond expectations.

Looking good Steven,

Can I just say that I have seen this thing in the flesh, before it was painted though.

My first impressions of the HD65 were, given the price of the thing - pretty good. the jump from SD (480P) to HDready (720P) on a projector with this size of screen is a big one. Did not have time to sit and watch a full film and did not have a lot to compare it to but damn, for the money it's pretty good. It's tiny too!

The problem Steven has is the room is very light. When there was a light image on the screen the whole room illuminated. In some cases theres jut nothing that can be done about it as its generally not 'nice' to have a black bedroom (lol or bat-caved' as someone put it) So i think the grey / high contrast screen is a good compromise.

In the interest of high quality home cinema though steven, Get your overalls on, get the ladders out and 'paint it black' :D the difference seen from a dark room to a light one can be more effective than buying more expensive equipment.

I've got a full HD (1080P) infocus IN80 being delivered tomorrow, which Steven will more than likely be coming around to see so I'd be interested to see exactly what difference an extra grand will get you, and if it is worth it!
I'll be posting my results as and when I get them. but I'll stand by my original first impression of the HD65. I cant wait to see it calibrated and with the new screen.

btw steven are you still getting the light coming through the back of the screen?

I'll bring my camera next time too and get some decent pics for ya ;)
then photoshop them to make them look bad

when i put the screen back up tonight i had a play with my Blu-Ray Reference DVD which has shades of blacks colours etc and adjusted to suite.. calibration does make a big difference so anyone with an uncalibrated screen should do so to improve results.

Hi mate. its not as bad and im convinced a few more coats will iliminate this problem completely i have ample amount of paint for another 10+ coats if i wanted to.

yeah i could do with some decent pics (wish id kept that spare piece of canvas for comparisons but nvm) you could probably bring one of your portable screens down to see if we could get some pics.

it will be interesting to see what you get for an extra £1k being spent on the projector itself, im really happy with my HD65 and as RB said.. its very good for the money.

oh may I add,

the ceilings are quite high too and to be honest, you don't really notice the screen when it's folded up. I'm sure it will get neatened up, but you only really see it if you take a photograph lol.

Looks really good steven, did you take the pictures after calibrating the PJ?

I hope you asked your GF before using her hairdryer to dry the paint!!

Would you mind sending me the details of where you got the paint from, e-mail in trust? Thanks.

The paint i can tell you here actually,

the base is S0709-Y70R from Leyland Trade which is mixed with Auto-Air Colours - Aluminum Base (Fine) (available on ebay and various air brushing shops)

4 Parts S0709-Y70R to 1 Part AA Aluminum
960ml to 2x240ml pots of AAA

its actually quite expensive when you think about it but i would recommend it to anyone who wants some more dark detail in the image.

Cost Breakdown
Wood £20
Stapler £10
Canvas £25
Spray Gun £23
Leyland Paint £8
AAA Paint £17
Borrowing a Compressor £8

As you can see ive spent about £100 on making the screen rather than spending £100 buying a pre-made one.. i feel that the results are worth every penny.

Thanks. I've got a compressor and spray gun already so I think I'll give it a try.

What canvas did you use and where did you get it from?

You wouldn't get a screen made to your exact dimensions for £100!

I need one to specific dimensions so I think this is the way to go for me too although I don't think I'll be hanging it from the ceiling.

What canvas did you use and where did you get it from?

i bought this:

Universal Primed Finest Italian Cotton
Fine Grain Texture, 320gsm, 2.1m wide (82in wide)
per 1 m

from http://www.jacksonsart.co.uk/

yeah i think your right i dont think id have gotten a decent screen for the price.. possibly a cheap one but id bet it wouldnt be nearly as good as this one.

onto my 5th coat of paint and i've still got about 1200ml left so that would mean ive only used about 600ml so 120ml per coat.. thats how thin the paint is going on.

Well I guess you could make your sweeps slower to give thicker coats but then you run into the possibility of runs in the paint.

Are you making vertical and horizontal sweeps?

been told to make quick thin coats to build it up slowly to get a better finish.

im doing horizontal sweeps and doing vertical now to try and iliminate the lines.

Love following this, you've more or less convinced me to get a projector setup of my own.

look forward to more pics!

Great work, keep going :)

I'm surprised you didn't get R B Customs to do the spraying, after all he is a bit of dab hand at it!!!

Oh and the screen looks fantastic!!!

I would have, but it wa a toss up between fitting a 2x1 screen in my pickup, and bringing it here, or removing my 150 litre compressor and taking it there... in the end, logistics made our lives hard and there was just no way to do it lol.

got my PJ today btw :D

I sent some paint samples to be analysed, here are the results

steveukbw.jpg

as you can see from the chart my mixture is almost spot on being neutral across the board. I couldn't have asked for a better outcome.

Just goes to show you don't have to spend a lot to achive good results from a projection screen

Thanks for reading,
StevenG

decided to put some lights behind the screen, cant decide which looks better. i think the camera might be making it seem different to what i see.

please ignore the audio quality or better still just mute it. Omnia HD videos and i havent gotten round to getting the new firmware.
