Tell me about the Mondeo ST Tdci

Hi there

Similar money (5-6k) gets you the Astra Sport Hatch 1.9CDTI SRI which comes as standard with 150BHP, weighs less. 0-60mph in 8.3s and combined 50MPG.

More importantly a simple remap takes them upto 205BHP so expect 0-60mph in 7s area, not bad for an oil burner. :)

Anyone got one ? What are they like for performance / mpg / tuneability etc ? :)

I dont know about the mechanical side (apart from hearing they suffer from injector problems, but can easily be sorted), but its the same spec at the ST220 so a lot of them are fully loaded: heated leather electric recaros, xenons, automatic lights and wipers, sat nav, sunroof, parking sensors etc. Its a nice place to be in compared to an Astra.

2.2 155PS in the ST TDCi, much nicer place the Astra, the Astra is for crashing round town or the Junior rep. Mondeo is a motorway cruiser, the Vectra SRi is 'ok' but not as comfy and quite as the ST along with is numb steering and comical chassie, but it is obviously cheaper. It's the same emissions as the 2.0 (£150) but a few groups higher on the insurance. Tuneability wise a map will see you 180bhp easy with Bluefin and you can go with usual mods to see 200, looking at 300lb/ft at 2300 rpm for what I can gather
You are indeed shortening it's life by tuning it, It would be my first consideration as a work horse but it does demand a premium over the non-body kit versions.

But you'd end up with an astra

I was dead set on buying a mondy ST TDCi as my next car after owning a 2.0tdci, i'd asked my ford dealer to keep an eye out for one for me, then i saw my audi, it was more expensive but worth the premium imo, that's not to say the ST TDCi is a bad car, quite the opposite, it looks gorgeous, especially in performance blue, you get a lot of car for your money, that's for sure, as mentioned, the injectors can be problematic and the rear subframe / bushes in mondeos in general tend to go (though i don't know if that's still the case in the later models).

Edit: Also as said above, consider an ST220 instead, the offset price of a Diesel car, and indeed the price of Diesel (even though it has come down to a quid a litre now) hardly makes it worth buying a Diesel these days. I'm spending round about the same a month filling my 2.0TFSi as i did filling my 2.0TDCi, granted, price of petrol has fell quite a lot now but who cares :D

Being realistic, the turbos and injectors seem to be problematic on most modern diesels. I presume its a by-product of running everything at enormous pressures in an attempt to get them to drive more like a petrol with better economy.

I've got a 2.0TDCi mondy. I like to think I take reasonable care of mine, but from how some sales reps drive (and lets face it, it's a sales reps car for hammering up and down the motorway all day long), it's hardly surprising stuff breaks occasionally. Of course, people only tend to post in motoring forums when they've got problems. I don't think I've seen a single, unsarcastic "hey, my turbo and injectors worked well today" thread in various forums.

If you're interested, head on over to Mondeo Enthusiasts Group and have a browse. You'll get all the info you need about reliability, mpg, tuning, etc. etc.

From what I can remember the figures are roughly:

mid 8's to 60, 45ish mpg and circa 180bhp with a remap (using the little tuning box which I have forgotten the name of), mid range grunt is pretty good and it handles well despite its size.

The problem however with the ST TDCI is the ST220 which is faster, has more kit and judging by the issues with the 2.2TDCI engine is more reliable (although obviously still suffers from the rear sub frame issue). The only downers are higher fuel consumption (although on longer journeys / motorway the ST220 should return ~30mpg) and higher tax although both can be offset with a lower purchase price.

So overall its a good car overshadowed by its twin.

Was that an optional extra?

Standard equipment unfortunately, particularly on the 2.2 TDCi which is even more likely to explode ;) Not exactly easy to tell either whether the car's been ragged to an inch of its life by the previous owner, and these aren't the sort of cars either that get taken on gentle 65mph 'eco runs' on the motorway by their owners. Turbo bearings, injectors, diesel pumps, EGR valves, glow plugs, smokey running.....just too much of an accident waiting to happen at high mileages. I wouldn't buy a high(ish) mileage one without a comprehensive warranty in place. Bluefinning one sounds like a long term reliability disaster.

By jove! Sneaky Peaky has managed to crack that age old motors chestnut - How to avoid being recommended a 'mondeo tbh' - post a thread asking for more info on Mondeos! - Get recommended an Astra.

I lold.

Depending on your mileage look at an ST220.

I had a trip on the M62, up the M1 to Ripon and back, 120 mile round trip and averaged 34mpg. Very well specced and the lovely sound when you floor it :D
