Regardless of performance issues I STILL LOVE THIS GAME !!! To anyone who's thinking should i or shouldn't I..... Always been a hit and miss with the other GTA games.. For instance Vice City was probably my most played game EVER... Never really got into San Andreas.. Too much driving around between missions.. GTAIV makes away with a lot of the frustrations i had with SA and cuts right to the chase... Highly recommended... Graphically it doesn't run any worse than the old series, its just our expectation have all increased...

I found the underground train line to second lsland so decided to run down it ....Police went crazy but i managedto kill a load of cops/FBI, get a car and drive around for ages...was well good... oh course i didnt save the game.

...while im waiting for Dexter s03 e12 il finish off this first island & make some progress.

Was thinking about getting this game, but dont have an xbox 360 controller... is it still quite playable using mouse/keyboard?

I'm annoyed now.

Just this week I upgraded from a pair of 8800GTXs running a Sammy 2232BW to a GTX260 rev. B running a Dell S2409W. Awesome set-up (in my eyes) but I have the sneaking feeling that the old set-up would have been better for this game.

Obviously, running the game at 1680*1050 is always going to be easier than 1920*1080, but, as has been confirmed in many of these posts, it's the video memory that's all-important. My 260 has 896MB of memory, whereas the 8800s had 700-odd each. Assuming these values are additive in sli mode, 1.5 gigs would run this game better than a faster card with "only" 896 meg - or so this thread seems to suggest.

The sweet spot, as suggested in izzy's screeny at the top of this page, is 941MB.

Buggrit, buggrem, millennium hand and shrimp.

I knew about this since playing it on the 360 heh, the cool thing is the drive wheel tyres can pop at the same time or one before the other resulting in comical handling if you attempt to drive. ALso damage to only one side of the car can lead to the car leaning in that direction when in motion - pretty cool!

yea im mighty impressed with these small details, really does bring it alive - Driving a bus with all 4 tires gone and on rims is just the funniest thing, brake - 4 mins later still going lol.

Anyone know if its possible to "up" the texture quality setting somewhere?.

I can't get mine to move past Medium. Render quality setting is on "High".

Also, I'm using an ATI card, is there a way to either get rid of or tone down those flickering black shadows?.

Other than that, it's running pretty good for me at 1440x900.

You'd need a graphics card with more RAM to up the texture quality.

there is a way to get around it.

to be able to select high textures you need to lower your res to a really low res, this way you can choose high textures since this is the way their resource system works, now since every time you choose a new level of textures the game needs to be restarted, so when your in game with your low res and high textures , go into the menu and select low textures and choose your high res again, this way , you still have high textures until a restart and your res will have changed.

Cool, cheers for that, will give it a bash.

Dunno if it's needed to be honest as its looking pretty good visually even at medium texture quality and high render.

So, what about the flickering shadows?. Way around that or just wait for a patch to sort it out?.

if i had 15fps i'd sooner kill myself than play it

haha, its not that bad, i sold off my gaming rig so this laptop is all i have at the moment.

I havent had time to play this yet, will be tweaking with some more settings and freeing up some more room on the hard drive(ahem, nearly 100% completed Fallout 3) should be about to put it to 20fps i hope.
