Leeds Types- Recommend a place to live (Yorkshire)

Otley is realllly nice, Bingley is orite.

Shipley is quite orite, or if you want closer to Leeds then Pudsey or Batley, they are quite nice places..

Get on google earth and look at all the estates around the city.

If you post places you like here ill tell you my knowledge on them, ive lived in Bradford 19 years so i should be able to shed some light.. :D

Rothwell is ok, got a few nice eateries and a couple of ok pubs. Woodlesford is only just down the road from there, it's an ok place too, though never tried the pubs there. Other options on the east(ish) side of leeds are Crossgates, Colton (Yay me!) and Garforth all of which are near to a train station and have very good bus links and other amenities. To be truthful Chapel Allerton and most of harrogate i think are a bit pricey.

With regards Wakefield, avoid Eastmoor (old council type estate, it's ok if you grew up there but can be a bit intimidating when you dont know anyone and pubs are a bit dicey!), Belle Vue (studenty), Portobello (see eastmoor!), Agbrigg (big asian community and v. hard to buy a house there as they are usually snapped up quite quickly). Nice places in Wakey are Ossett, Sandal, St Johns, Outwood (seems nice but never really been spent much time there).

Like Wakield myself , i go windsurfing at Pugneys feels very open out of the centre with nice countryside with places like Bretton park ect plus with the m1 its easy to get to ,was in the ridings centre on sunday and it always seems loads quieter than white rose

Could you tell me what areas to avoid/look at in the Wakefield area a we are quite interested in Wakefield. Have between 400-600 per calendar month.

Avoid:

Kettlethorpe, Peacock, Eastmoor, Lupset, College Grove, some ares of Normanton.

Good:

Osset, Alverthorpe, Stanley, Sandal, Walton, St Johns.

(grew up in Wakefield, lived there 20 odd years)

Harrogate = good but expensive.
Otley = good but expensive.

I'd be looking at Halifax and surrounding areas as they will be affordable and NO ******* students!

When I worked in the centre of Leeds, my friends, who lived in Sowerby Bridge (near Halifax) could get to their car, get on the motorway and arrive home before I could get home by bus to Headingley ........ go figure.

Basically, anywhere but North of Leeds will be cheaper and not too bad to live in; have a weekend or two looking around the places like Rothwell etc.

Harrogate for sure! :D

Whenever I'm back in Bradford, I have to go for a trip to Harrogate, its just a cool place to be tbh! Expensive but cool! I wouldn't mind living there when I'm older (and rich) :)

Otley's quite nice too, my parents go there because theres an ace butchers there, brilliant meats. It's nice to have a look round there but not as appealing as Harrogate. I can't talk about appealing though since I grew up in Bradford (well..I live in the nice part :P )

I live in Otley and it's a good place to live imo :)

Rent is around £525-£600 on most properties. I rent for £600 a month in a large stone terraced house - 2 reception rooms, kitchen, bathroom, 3 big bedrooms and decent sized rear garden.

It's about 30 mins on a bus to Leeds or you can get a bus to the train station (takes 5-10 mins) in Menston.

Harrogate and Otley are very nice places but in my opinion a bit expensive. If I was looking for something quite affordable I would be looking in Horsforth, Lawnswood, Bramley, Adel.

I know you want to move out of Headingley but there are parts of it tucked away that are away from the students and very nice. Behind the three horse shoes pub and over that way is very nice.

Having done this same search last year, I'd go for Chapel Allerton (well...I did, I like it here) or Roundhay. I did look at Otley too and it's very nice, but IMO it's a bit too much of a small quiet town. Pretty much no nightlife at all, I think it'd get boring pretty quickly.

Yeadon is awful and full of chavs. You wouldn't dare go out into the 'centre' on a Friday or Saturday night. Most of Yeadon is a council estate, too.

Otley is full of old people or weird people (referred to as 'Valley inbreds').

Guiseley is a nice place and has a lot of new development (snap up a bargain).

Menston is a step up (more upmarket) than Guiseley, less pubs and no modern bars restaurants etc.

Ilkely in general is again another step up, lots of pubs, posh restaurants and expensive bars.

Harrogate is in general a very nice place, but tends to be pricey.

Another vote for Horsforth from me. Nice selection of pubs, theres a few useful shops. It's close to countryside and at the same time a trip into Leeds on the train is just 15 - 20 mins. Usually a good selection of properties to rent however. One bad point is that the traffic can get congested on an evening.

If you're working in Leeds avoid Wakefield. The buses and trains are an unreliable nightmare and will wear you down.

It has a bad rep but I've bought a place in Upper Armley and it's fantastic. Lovely and quiet, multiple 20 minute bus routes into town and property prices really aren't too bad.

Buses were sometimes bad from Wakefield to Leeds, but i hardly ever had a problem commuting from either Sandal & Agbrigg or Westgate station to leeds in the morning and back home at night in the 4yrs i was doing it.

With regards estate agents, Halifax, Hunters, william h brown, heritage. Manning Stainton are the biggest ones in the leeds area though.

Seriously? Getting home on a night was never too bad but I remember spending many a morning waiting for a train from Wakefield to Leeds that was delayed by 20 minutes and would then only have 2 carriages. Maybe things have improved :P
