I would like to receive my emails on my phone. I have a data bundle but dont feel comfortable with it "always" been connected.
I am looking for a free push email provider that will allow me to send emails using my own email address (unlike mail2web).
Does anyone know of such a thing or is there a different way of setting it up on my phone so that it doesnt keep a live connection open all the time.

I use Hotmail on mine, but tbh i never actually use push, because I use HSDPA as well, which means my battery will last approx. 4 minutes!

(btw with Hotmail and any exchange account you configure, you can setup peak and off-peak times. So you could have it to say, sync automatically during the day, then after a certain time, just poll every hour or so.... it's quite flexible).

If you've got a touchHD the only way to get push on it normally is to get a Microsoft Exchange account. You can't push from hotmail. However you can also set it to just collect your messages every 5 min, which for most people will do.

Your other option to to buy a copy of FlexMail and use its IMAP idle facility to push emails from an IMAP compatible account, (like Gmail), not sure if your account will do this.

Also do bare in mind that push email (well via exchange) will kill your battery. Your phone is effectively checking every few seconds and the batter on my TyTN II only holds on for about 4 hours with 3G and push enabled....

I've just got my Omnia checking for mail from my three email addresses (Google, Yahoo and Talktalk) every 15 minutes!... I've yet to see it regester on my bill over the included (Voda Unlimited) package!..

much easier than faffing with 'Push' email... and I'm only ever 15 minutes away from being contactable... I did have it on 5 minutes... but that just got annoying at work with the notifications!...

I've never really seen the advantage of a push mail service to a mobile. Just set the phone to send/receive as often as you need (min time is 5 minutes I think on win mob 6.1). It's unlikely that email will blow any data package limits, and you can always limit the size of the message downloaded if you are getting lots of large mails.

Is there some requirement to use your own outgoing server? I have my mobile linked to t-mobiles smtp server to send mail, but the from field is my ntl account so any replies end up in a monitored account.

On the subject of email.

What happens if I have a Touch HD hooked up to my work exchange server when I am in the office. If an email pops up on my desktop, will I also get a notification in 15 minutes time when my phone updates? (If I have set it to every 15 minutes?)

I am new to WinMo.

Pretty much, yes.

Although unless i'm missing something here... I have the option to sync Hotmail "as items arrive" (i.e. push) - can no one else see this?

No, well it depends on what you do with the email. Exchange will replicate any changes to both devices. So if you read/delete the email on your desktop the next time the phone syncs it will replicate those changes. If you haven't read it, then it will pop up as a new message.

I think there is a bit of confusion here. Push email is great, but whats better about it is your mail box is syncronised. Right now I can collect my work mail from anywhere, and any changes I make are replicated, so if I read some messages at home and delete/sort/reply those changes are reflected when I'm back at work. You can't this sort of thing with POP3, or even IMAP really (and IMAP on WM doesn't work properly anyway). The push bit is a bonus. With proper setups, it replicates the funtionality of your desktop mail client, so you get remote address book lookup, full schedual support (arrange meetings, etc, etc). Its pretty ace actually.

However if you just want email 5 mins faster, then push email is a little bit OTT for most people. It also tends to drain battery life rather quickly as well.

Cool, that sounds pretty perfect.

Can you set dates and times to check as well? I don't really want my work email being checked at the weekend unless I specifically need to.

So, can I set it to check every 30 mins on Monday to Fridays?

Sorry for all the questions.

Yes you can, you can set 'peak' and 'off peak' times

For example, I have my phone set to use 'push' between 8:30 - 17:30 Monday-Friday and do nothing on the weekend (although if i wanted to, I could set it to check every hour or so... etc)

Cool.

Do you find your battery lasts longer at the weekend because of this?

How/where can I find the settings to set this up please ?

Yes. Push really does have a massive impact on a devices battery life.

Wow I said that without moving my lips! :P

In Activesync (on your phone) go to Options > Schedule. The options to set peak times are there.

In Activesync (on your PC) you just simply connect the phone, then click on 'Schedule' then click on "Change Times" to set the times (duh!) :o

You'll notice the "As items arrive" option - this is 'push' and will keep your data active constantly during the time you specify (and this option is available for Hotmail as well, so I dunno why people say you can't use push with it

If you have several email addresses that you need to check (like most of us). I set those accounts to auto forward new mail to my vodafone email account, hence I only need to check one account every 15mins rather than 4/5.

Kind of obvious I know but its still a tip. :D

Hmm had a dig around, there appears to be an option, although whether it works not should be interesting. I'll switch it on and see.....
