Hey guys,

I've been looking around for a decent case in the £50-£100 range for my upcomming i7 build (after xmas and hopefully the price drops :D). I'm not really a fan of mahusive boxes as they all seem to be these days and I usualy go for Antecs Sonata range/Mid-Towers.

Came accross the Lian Li A05B and was wandering if you reckon an i7 build on the P6t would fit in there with CPU cooler, 2 HD's and a GTX 260?? I'm planning to overclock to 3.2ghz with the multiplyer so nothing major. Its for a recording studio so space and noise levels are the two things on my mind.

If not, have you guys got any cases you could recommend. I love the look of Antecs P182 (not a fan of blinged gaming cases ) but i was told it was a bigun

Cheers!!

Well I've got one and I'm pretty sure it can fit any standard ATX board, the only real issues would be the height of your cpu cooler and the length of that gtx 260. after I've had me lunch I'll grab a tape measure and see what sort of room you'd have to play with.

That would be grand, the gtx 200 series are big cards, not planning on having on a giant cpu cooler, but then again my options arent great with i7's atm.

What's the cooling and cable management like? I'm not expecting miracles with a case of this size but I'm happy to mod it a little to get a better airflow.

The only other thing is that I'm gonna be putting a SAS 15krpm HD in, how's it for HD vibrations? My partner has a rig and it rattles all over the shop atm with just a 7k drive in it! Not a good thing for the studio. A quiet case is a must!

Sorry to pick ya brain :)

Well cable management certainly isn't a forte of mine, but I took a photo anyway (the top of the photo is actually the bottom of the case and the left side is the rear). Anyway, try and ignore the wires and dust!

Snip...

The air gets drawn in by that rear 120mm fan and expelled by a second that is located right in front of the hard-drive bays so I guess it isn't perfect for unobstructed airflow. I've never had heat-related problems though...*shrug*

When installing your hard drives, you have these little rubber grommet thingies:

Snip...

That you first screw onto the hdd and then guide onto the rails provided, so your hard-drive isn't actually directly in contact with the frame at all. The optical drive bay is a more traditonal affair so if you're going to get any noise from your drives it'll be from there, although I've never seen a 15krpm SAS drive in action though so umm, that may not hold true for you.

Onto the graphics card. Mine is an x1950xt that is ~230mm in length and you can see there is still quite a lot of room left. I'm not sure how high up the pci-express slot would be on the P6T, but depending on whether it sits infront of the floppy or hdd bays, you would have ~310mm or ~280mm to work with. I think in either instance a gtx260 would fit.

Oh and for the CPU cooler, anything under 180mm would be fine, my one there is ~130mm tall just for comparison.

I hope that helps you with your decisions. :)

EDIT - One last thing, that motherboard in there is the full atx size so that should give you an idea of how tight (or not as it turns out) a fit it would be.

Thats brilliant, thanks for the photos, spot on!!

I'll be using a modular psu so that should help with cable management, is there only space for the 2 fans in there?? The SAS drives do get a bit hot, just a bit worried that the CPU will get good cooling, but the HD's will get the hot air with those fans.

The GTX 260's are about 270mm so that should be fine in there, lookin like the case for me! Has anyone else got some alternative suggestions to the A05B?
I was also wondering if there's some kind of fan you can put into the spare CD bay, I'm having a look atm but cant find anything.

Thanks for all the help Nullvoid!

You're welcome!

Without customising the case you would be stuck with those 2 fans yes, although I guess the PSU must be doing a bit to help out. What you're describing though sounds a lot like the Scythe kama bay cooler so maybe that's a viable option for you. Other than that, perhaps you'd be happier with a more traditional layout (by Lian Li standards anyway) as seen in the PC-A07 or PC-A6010.

Lian Li A05B will be perfect! I 'm going to build i7 system in this case - water cooled 2x GTX280 with Feser 360.
Don't worry, there is plenty of space in this small incredible case.
