Maybe I'm a noob or something, but I cannot get the madwifi Atheros drivers to compile in Ubuntu 7.10. I followed the instructions with the driver package and get a kernel version error  If it makes any difference the wireless chipset is Atheros AR5008.

Side note: Is there any particular reason you're using a version that's so far out of date? Have you tried 8.10 to see if it fixes your problem?

The kernel version used in 7.10 is newer than what the drivers require...hence  I could try a different distribution but I spent a while customising this and I'd prefer to keep it.

others will need to confirm this but I think if you run some magic update command you can upgrade to 8.10 via terminal. Thus keeping your lovely settings. 8.10 is a vast improvement over 7.10.
