Hey there.

Started the car today and it is shuddering a lot, When accelerating in any gear there is very limited power and accelerates extremely slow.

At first I thought it was just missing but I don't think it's as simple as that.

Somebody said change the fuel filter as it could be simply some dirty fuel.

Anybody got any ideas of what it could be?

It's a 03 Focus, Petrol with a Zetech Engine.

coil pack maybe. could try some fuel cleaners but this issue is normally the coil or something with the HT leads.

does it do it when foot to the floor? My fiesta would shudder like mad unless i was "flat out". lol

Does it foot to the floor or Flat out.

Do you know how much a Coil Pack is and is it easy to install?

not totally sure on a focus but its normally just 4 screws (star type head, not philips). and a plug that goes to the ECU plus the 4 HT leads. 5minute job in itself, however the focus has the airbox above the engine, which needs to removed as well... Will add an hour to the job :(

It is "easy" but also a pain in the back side getting the airbox off sometimes.

Once its warmed up is it still doing it and has any ECU lights came on the dash? Does it idle ok or is that all jumpy too?

Might be worth running some fuel system cleaner through first. But i still think the coil is cause.

Does the engine warning light come on at the same time? Does the engine sound as if it's running rough?

As for a Mk1.5 focus- no need to remove the airbox to get the coil pack off, just 4 torx screws and the ECU plug/HT leads. 5-10 minute job and easy to DIY.

I had this on my MK6 Fiesta, changed the spark plugs and the Coilpack/HT leads and it solved it :)

It only started when the weather got cold, didn't have it all summer, or I only noticed in winter as I drive on the weekends only.

Sounds like a misfire,
Clean or replace your sparks: if that doesnt work then its probably a fuel delivery problem so check the fuel pump and filter, if that doesnt solve it then best of luck sorting it out :)

My Wifes car had the same problem a while ago and she called the RAC out who changed the coil pack (£50) and it cured the problem, in fact the car drove 100% better than it did before she felt the problem so it was probably on its way out for a while.
You can pick them up from the auction site for about £25 and as others have said its not that hard to fit.
I was reading that if you drive the car for a long time with a faulty coil pack it can damage the ECU, so worth getting it sorted asap.

Precisely the same as me. Sounds like a coil pack for sure OP.

same happened to my V6 mondeo was running fine then it was like I lost a couple of cylinders shuddering really bad (made worse by solid engine mounts) felt really slow it seemed to struggle quite badly to move changed coil pack and back to normal :)

Thanks for the help guys,

I just called out The AA and they came to my house, Plugged it up to one of their machines which reads error codes, it turned out that it was not firing on all cylinders and it was he Coil pack at fault.

He replaced it there and then at the cost of £75.
