GTX 295 & 285 to launch on Jan. 8th @ CES 2009

How much better can we except this card to be over a 4870X2 and 280GTX?

Which one?

The GTX 285 is just an overclocked GTX280 with potential to clock higher than the current GTX280 do.

The GTX296 is just two GTX280's so look at any review which compares GTX280 in SLI to get an idea of performance which will indeed surpass the 4870x2.

Not quite. The GX2 card appears to have the shader count of the GTX280 yet the rest of the specs are from the GTX260 (448bit memory interface x2 etc).

But it would seem logical that Nvidia would want this card to perform better than the HD4870X2 simply to get the performance 'crown' back again.

I wonder if it will be downclocked though, (possibly the reason for the increased shader count??) partly due to the heat it will produce in a relatively tight space (it looks roughly the same space as the standard GTX2XX cooler takes up but will have to cool two cores rather than one).

I would guess GeForce GTX 295 £425+, most likely won’t shift many so price drops a month or so down the line, when current EOL stocks run down. GeForce GTX 285 is the one that would interest me, although with Nvidia been known for consumer pocket denting pricing it will probably start out at £375+.

IMO I think the pricing for the new cards will go something like:

GTX295 - £500
GTX285 - £350
GTX265 - £200

Then when it turns out the GTX295 isn't that much faster than the 4870X2, it'll drop down to about £430, not that it'll stop the fanboys purchasing it on launch at the fully bloated retail price of about £600 by the time it gets to them.

nope, Nvidia are incredibly well known for producing a part so expensive they can win the performance crown with a product with yields in the dozens and no one will buy due to the price so lack of supply is a non issue. look for the GTX295 to be a part made in the low thousands, at £600 or more and for no one to buy it. Prices aren't likely to be particularly low on the other parts, the die size hasn't decreased much at all, and yields on a new process are almost always lower than the last, because this is such a small drop in die size decreased yeilds are likely to cause increased cost to Nvidia at the moment, seeing as ATi forced Nvidia's prices to be barely profitable at the moment, 55nm won't save them much money for a while.

Wrong way around - it's two GTX285's on a 448-bit bus with 896MB of memory per core.

Yup, 2x 512mbit bus's apparently don't fit on a cheap enough board, the 280gtx was already 12layer and incredibly expensive to make due to the 512mbit, a GX2 likely needs a much thicker card and the full bus probably took it to insane levels of cost or quite possibly was impossible to get working due to signal interference.

Likely to be faster than the 4870x2, but considering prices, won't come close to being worth it. I wouldn't be surprised if in benchmarks and great scaling games 2x 4850x2's won't end up cheaper, more available and faster than a 295GTX. The fact is for 1920x1200 anything more than a 4870x2 is going to be overkill, you might consider a 295GTX for a higher res machine, but very very few people game at 2560x1600.

I stumbled upon this one quite a while ago, he has some insane money to spend on toys.

I also think he has the coolest geek accent ever, I just can't place it at all.

Near sure he said one time he's welsh, it sounds welsh but then again it sounds like something else is in the mix there.
