Today, the Pound Sterling took a devastating blow as it is recorded as record Euro low. £1 now trades at €1.1236. With the financial crises showing no indication of stopping, quite evidently taking its toll on major retail chains such as Woolworths, and banks such as Halifax.

Would now be a good time to join the Euro? We'd be the laughing stock of Europe as we previously slated the idea of joining the Euro. But pride aside, would it save our economy?
My personal opinion is we should brave it out until this Credit Crunch is showing signs of diminishing. Then if the government play it strategically, the Pound Sterling should bounce back strong again.

If a Don could add a poll "Should the UK join the Euro?" with the following options that would be great:
Yes - We should join as soon as possible.
Yes - We should join in the next few years.
Yes - We should join at some point in the next few decades.
No - We should never join the Euro.

Personally, No, I like the independance and I think the EU have to much say as it is.

I also doubt that any Government would want to now as it would clearly highlight the difference in the cost of things between us and Europe. Not to mention we wouldnt be allowed due the current climate and our unstable exchange rate.

I would need some unbiased information on the advantages and disadvantages joining would bring.

If we join it should be for long term benefit not short term relief.

So I fail to see which of these options will go along with my thoughts...

Its intresting times ahead, thats for sure. Holidays are going to become more expensive, and I know I am going to end up spending a shed load when I go skiing next year. With £1 almost the same as 1Euro, well, that lift pass is gonna cost a lot more than last year!

My opinion... we should sit it out for a while and see if it bounces back.

No - We should never join the Euro.

I think that the EU has far too much power over our country and our laws as it is. I also feel that the idea of a single interest rate over the entire Eurozone is also a very bad idea - separate countries need control over their own economies and interest rates

Not to mention the fact that I feel that the pound is part of our culture and our country and it would be a great shame to have to start to use Euros

no we should not join the EU

gordon brown is probably already considering the idea as yet another kneww jerk reaction to make it look like hes doing something

Emm we are in the EU.

But no we shouldnt scrap the pound for the euro. The pound is part of our mentality and identity, we are an island. Not sure why i feel so strongly about this tbh but i do :p

Edit: to slow lol

Join it and enjoy the benefits, but no doubt most of you haven’t have you ;).

How do you mean?

Do you mean been to europe and used the euro? I have... dunno bout anyone else. And it is convenient, especialy with so many open borders. But we are an island so it dosent make a huge difference.

No - We should never join the Euro.

This.

And I think we should leave the EU as well.

why do people think in any way that having the Euro would remotely fix our problems in the economy, it would simply change the numbers on the prices of things, thats literally it. The price of bread won't change to the same as in France, it will just be listed in a different currency. It will still be expensive here, just expensive in Euro's.

Our economy is dying as we don't export any damn goods to bring profit into the uk, if we had any goods to export then switching may/may not help us to export more, or bring more in cheaper, but the problem is we simply don't sell anything properly anymore. Our economy is dying because we raise taxes to pay for needless public service jobs that rise in numbers every year so Labour can hide unemployment.

The way to fix our economy is to get business back into the uk, or industry, and stop employing people in the NHS that aren't doctors/nurses, and put the people that would be sitting in an office gettign 20k a year to read and post on facebook, into jobs creating products to sell abroad. UNfortunately Labour is busy increasing taxes and actively hurting small business and big business's alike and has been essentially forcing them to leave the uk to maintain profits. Every growing country seems to know the benefits of courting business's to bring factories to their countries with offers of tax breaks so it doesn't cost them more to run a factory in their country, but the same or slightly less than anywhere else.

Its not hard, you offset wage increases/power costs to run with tax breaks so the company makes the same profit but operates in your country, the profits they are taxed on, is taxed in your country, and the 50-50k employee's all pay tax, spend money, buy houses, buy food, go to cinema's pubs, restaurants, buy clothes, drive cars, etc, etc, etc.
