'lo folks.

Ive got a little bit of money. Whats the fastest car I can get for £7K.

Dont care if its old/new/jap/notjap or how much it costs if it goes wrong. I'd do most of it myself unless it was ultra specialist.

Ive seen a Lotus Carlton for sale near that price, but needs a fair bit of work..

Seems like EVO RS's are just out of that bracket.

MPG, dont care about that either! Looked at older Porches, i.e 944/968, but not really quick enough.

Any suggestions ?

Fastest in a straight line: old E55. If it was my money CTR or 'blob eye' WRX. Unless you're a time served mechanic with access to a ramp forget super saloons they are complex machines which require specialist knowledge.

£7000 is a tricky one, the "fastest car" will have lots of people arguing about riced japanese cars, and they would be right.

I guess if we take your criteria literally, and go straight out of the box, and we take it that the maintenance really doesnt matter, then i'd have an E39 M5, ~400bhp out of the box and a very nice car to boot. Amazingly the older examples have actually got cheaper than this budget. Maintenance wouldnt be a worry if you also have a Lotus Carlton and an old Evo on your list.

Hang on, hang on...

A BLOBeye for £7k ? I thought you could only get the BUGeye for that money, unless ive got my blobs and bugs mixed up ! errr....

IMO there is not much to beat the Scooby rumble. I must be well behind the times if you can get an M5 for that sort of money.

I must admit I have never driven one. What is the performance like from say 100 to 140 ? Does it just keep on pulling?

Could always look to a late-model C4 Corvette, with the LT4 engine. Well over 330BHP at 5800RPM and a useful 340ft.lb of torque. It'll have a 6-speed manual and punch the following tickets:

0-60 : 4.8-5.2 seconds
0-100 : 10.7 seconds
Top speed : 168MPH
Lateral G: 0.89g

Either in special edition 'Grand Sport' model, or factory option LT4 in a 'standard' coupe:

The LT4 cars can be quite hard to find but the infinitely more common LT1 engined cars are no slouch and not much further behind, with 'only' 300BHP and 340ft.lb as standard but, as with most Chevrolet engined machines, have unlimited potential.

Tough too, easy to get bits for, not bad to work on, massive aftermarket support and will even return decent economy in daily use and on motorway cruise. Good on track too!

British roads have corners, rapid changes in camber, glorious hidden dips, the moving road block (Micra/206/Jazz) and you reccommend Corvettes?

Get an WRX. Point to point nothing is quicker on British roads all year round.

You realise Lashout has owned a lot of Corvettes and hasn't ditched one?
