Teacher threatens to call the cops over Linux

This thread has made me want to build a cheap HTPC running Linux ¬_¬

Best place to start (Linux wise) ? I''ve never used Linux before but I'm no blunt and pick things up fast :)

Ubuntu is a good choice for beginners :)

I'm assuming installation of drivers etc are all built in!?

yep :)

try out the live CD. it'll give you a good example of the OS's functionality and useability without having to install anything. beat that vista!

Bought the Mrs. a netbook for crimbo with Linux on. It'll be up to her though whether I install XP instead when it arrives.

Personally hoping she sticks with Linux as I'd like to have a poke around there myself.

I worked in a Juvenile prison and there was 2 Linux based PC's in the IT room.
Every now & then one of the lads had to go on those PC's and it caused so much bother (arguing & fighting) they ended up removing the PC's.

I've done the same for my partner. I've taken Linux off for XP, but only because she's nearing the end of her masters degree and the last thing she needs right now is to learn a new OS and work out which programs will be compatible with the pprinters and programs she uses at Uni!

Hopefully when she's done she'll let me put linux back on though.

funnily enough ive just thought the same thing.....

That really is shocking. Windows is an important platform for kids to learn, but it shouldn't be the only platform.

At Primary School level maybe. Using a GUI operating system of any time should be second nature long before they hit Secondary School. However having spent many a years in the education system I know how poor the standard of computer education is..

The unnamed teacher apparently believed that anything that wasn't Windows was illegal and immoral.

She's American and I thought nearly all American schools used Apple computers? :p

How would that teachers tiny brain cope with OS X? :D

What they were fighting to get onto the linux computer?

*Runs into the thread* "GENTOO GENTOO!!!" *Runs away*

I went through a phase of using Gentoo until I decided I preferred to spend more time actually using software than compiling and installing it :p

Mind you, even a fairly conservatively stripped down custom-compiled kernel running under Gentoo booted up in double-quick time :D

I just like portage, it has almost all the apps I could ever want and you only really install things once... Maybe twice after you figure out you want to use some more keywords.
