I've never been the biggest fan when it came to watching movies but recently i've been staying up late and watching dvd after dvd. This week i've so far purchesed 7 dvd's and there's still Saturday and Sunday to go.

I'm not to sure where this has came from but i'm really enjoying watching these movies.

With not being a movie fan in the past, I have no idea which films to go out and get.

What i'm after is someone to push me in the right direction. Throw some titles out there for me. I like movies that make you think and movies that surprise you. My favourite film might have to be Donnie Darko. I've recently watched The Dark Knight and Cloverfield which I really enjoyed.

Here's a list of what genre im interested in;

* Action/Adventure
* Animation
* Comedy
* Cult Movies
* Comic Book Movies
* Documentary
* Drama
* Fantasy
* Horror
* Military
* Romantic Comedy
* Science Fiction
* Thriller

Even just a few would do. Just to keep me entertained for a few nights :D

Thanks!

Watched American Beauty today with my girlfriend who had never seen it. She loved it, I always forget how fantastic that film is.

So yeah, American Beauty. I'm a huge fan of Donnie Darko too, so i imagine you'll enjoy it.

Memento
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
The Big Lebowski
Internal Affairs
Oldboy
Pan's Labyrinth
Amélie

Some of my favourites. Look them up on imdb for plotlines and reviews and such.

Think I might have seen American Beauty a while back but i do recall it being very good, might give it another watch sometime.

Thanks for that list Scott, think i'll check them out also.

If I could pick only one from this year I would pick In Bruges. It's very good; witty, dark, clever and highly entertaining imo.

Military-wise, I think you're looking at Saving Private Ryan and Black Hawk Down, for the modern ones, even Band of Brothers (I seem to recommend that a lot :)).

I'm not sure about the other genres you mention, I'll give it more thought.

Incidentally, check out the thread in GD below about getting 3 months free DVD rental from TescoDVD, might save you a few pennies on all these recommendations.

American Psycho, watched that last night and it's great although very weird, and anything by Tarantino is definitely worth watching eg. Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill etc.

better off picking a good few directors and watching their works, if you love Donnie Darko then you will love david lynch films imo and kubrick

David Lynch
Stanley Kubrick
Francis Ford Coppola
Martin Scorcese
John Carpenter

also any film produced by Jerry Bruckheimer is usually great

Weirdo!

Romantic Comedy:
Sleepless in Seattle
As Good As it Gets
Must love dogs
Mannequin
You've Got Mail
Love Actually
Notting Hill

Just tell people you watched them with your girlfriend. If you dont have one then say you're gay. They will understand

Science Fiction:
The Thing
Pitch Black
Alien/(s)
Screamers
Blade Runner

Don't watch that unless you watch Firefly first.

I watched it without watching Firefly and really enjoyed it, I suppose it might have been better if I'd watched the series first but I don't think it impacted much on my enjoyment.

As for great films - 12 Angry Men, Casablanca, Dr Strangelove (or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb), Seven Samurai (Shichinin No Samurai) are all classics that you really should watch at least once in your life.
