Is it worth the downgrade (4870 to 4850)

Ello everyone, I am soon downscaling from 20" widescreen to 19", meaning resolution will be going down from 1680x1050 to 1440x900. I currently have an Akasa Vortexx cooler on my 4870 which I got back in July, about a month after my mate got his HIS 4850 (the standard one) for his 22". Now, he is offering his 4850 and the difference of price between 4870 and a Vortexx (so based on OCUK prices currently about £60) for my 4870. This to me looks excellent, as I can put tht £60 towards the new monitor and still have a decent card.

So, is the 4850 up to it (sounds like it is) and with an e8400 @ stock and 4gb ram, how much performance difference is there between to 2 at 1440x900?

Yep,will be fine,i used a 4850 for 2months playing @ 1680 x 1050 and it was fantastic.Now got 2 cards in CF playing @ 1920 x 1200 and its just excellent.

you're kidding.

1440x900 is between 1024x768 and 1280x1024....the 4850 will barely be stretching its legs let alone a 4870.

In fact, an 8800GTS or similar might perform better at those resolutions.

I've gone from a 4850 @ 800/1100 to a GT @ 750/1750/1050. 1680 x 1050 used and barely noticed it tbh. currently on a 8800GTS (G92) @ 800/1800/1150 and don't feel I'm missing out at all.

dead space - check, FC2 - check, WAW - check, fine I don't slap on 16xAA but tbh if the games got my attention as it should I really should not be concerned that those tiles over on the fourth house from my right just beyond the tree looks a bit squiffy

1440x900 is actually slightly higher res than 1280x1024. Aside from that, I agree with you.

my 8800gtx struggled with crysis at 1024x768 maxed out but with no aa. but with every other game it was fine.

tbh i would just keep your current card. otherwise you will only have to upgrade sooner, not worth it over 60 notes imo

Well being a uni student I'm looking at getting a TV, and the 19" LG I'm looking at is £160 with 2 HDMI ports (so PC and 360) and the 22" is an extra £50.

So downgrading is £60 towards it and my halls mate is buying my monitor for £100, so a free up/down grade (better contrast, better speakers, smaller screen)

Ive just downgraded from a 20/1" widscreen to a 19" non widescreen cos the 20.1" was damaging my eyes cos the text is way too small to be looking at the screen near enogh all day every day.

My 3870 runs games smoother on the 19", plus my eyes loves me for going back to my 19", but I think the 20" has caused damage to my eyes.. Can you eyes repair them selfs?

what, wait, you got a smaller screen with smaller res so the text was bigger? Did you not think of increasing the text size. what you did was essentially set your 20" monitor to a lower res, and cover up an inch of your screen, except you went the expensive route.
