New Quads?

Thanks for the advice guys.

I would like to pick up a Q9550 but it is a bit pricy so its looking more and more like a E8X00

Exactly how I ended up getting the e8500. Q6600 gone up and up in price. they were about £110 a few months ago and now £160 on ocuk. and, as posted above, the later ones can be really hard to get to 3ghz. Q9*** just too much for my budget. Then i started reading on the e8*00 and it was pretty much the best gaming CPU.

I wouldn't want to buy a brand new Q9550 (or even at £180 second hand on the bay) when it's almost the same cost as a i7 920

i7 has complicated things somewhat, but if you've got a newish high end DDR2 rig then Q9*50 is still worth it.

ive thought about i7 quite a bit, & very nearly pushed the button a number of times now, however, ive got an E8500, Abit IX38 QuadGT, 4gb Geil black dragon DDR2. if im lucky, i might manage to get say £200 for the lot, maybe £220 if im really really lucky. having spent a truly obscene amount of time googling, the cheapest possible i7 combi i can come up with will run me 540, less of course what i make back on my current rig, so call it 340 to quad i7.

if i just sell my 8500 & stick a Q9550 in, i'll have gone quad for maybe 140 tops. ive been dual > quad > dual > quad > dual & now quite fancy going quad yet again. i7 aint gonna be on the shopping list for at least 6 months. for me.

i brought my q6600 and totally disagree with the new ones not overclocking well i brought mine first of december and its sitting at 3.4hz happy on air

i did get it to 3.6 but couldnt get it stable with low enough temps to be safe for 24/7 use so i left it at 3.4

How about a Q9300? They should be out soon and are meant to be intels replacement for the Q6600. Clocked slightly faster and 45nm seems like a winner to me?

True, true, but I've got an E8400 which is £30 cheaper than the 6600 at the moment and it will run 4ghz without changing any voltages at all and 4.7ghz @1.35v before it all becomes a bit too much for my cheap AC7 cooler.
All utterly stable and done with the minimum of fuss (loosen ram timings and turn it up).

All the Q6600 hating is a bit stupid really, granted don't buy one new now. But for £90 they are outstanding value second hand.

a lot of the problems is people would rather have a higher clocked due core than quad

a 3.4 clocked quad will do everything now and i think for a long time in the future too tbh

why go spending more on a proccessor if an overclocked q6600 will do the same

yes u might save 5 quid a year on elecy but thats not a lot compared to what u pay for the newer processor

When I got my Q6600, I was unsure about it as I was hearing at the time all this OMG E8400 4GHZ BEST GAMING CPU EVAR

However, now I've had it for well over 5 months, I can safely say I made the right choice.
