RAF scrambled to intercept Russian bombers.

Sky News understands the Russian aircraft crossed a section of airspace controlled by the UK, but the Ministry of Defence has refused to confirm or comment.

However, the MoD has confirmed the North Sea encounter.

I realize this is a quote of a sky news story but to me those two statements are contradictory

RAF would happily escort them to Scotland and Wales.
Do you realise a lot of the pilots are Scottish and Welsh and that the prime minister is Scottish? If you beleive the RAF would let Scotland and Wales be bombed then theres something wrong going on in your head.

the russians will never give in...

when they run out of weapons, they will send thousands of unarmed troops just run at your face!.

you will run out of ammo, and unamed russians will fly into your face

They will rape your women and kick you all in the urals....;)

Could you please do me a favour and never ever go into politics, please?

I'm finding this average COD4 Joe talk of military might of UK and Russia quite entertaining :p

Europe don't even have a proper functional combined military unit let alone a sponsered NMD...why would you think we would have one? Where would we get the money? Jeez, the USA who have a defence budget which dwarfs our own is still devolping theirs.

No idea, I just kind of assumed we would, seems like an obvious thing to have.

I guess nukes have probably saved more lives than killed. They saved lives in WWII since if they hadn't been launched Japan would have thought to the death and millions of soldiers on both sides would have died. And if it wasn't for nukes the cold war probably would have been less of a stale mate.

Considering the amount of deployable ICBM's, both sub and silo based that the Russians can call on, any attempt to build a missile defence shield aimed at neutralising their strategic nuclear threat would be futile. A simple saturation attack would overwhelm any such system, and the opposite is true of Russia.

MAD - Mutually Assured Destruction is what currently prevents any nuclear exchange from actually taking place. That and the possibility of slightly warming relations between Medvedev and Obama when he takes office.

Is it? We are not in the Cold War anymore. If there was ever going to be a state fired nuclear missle it would have happened then. Now if a nuclear strike is going to happen it would come from terrorists, and probably not in the form of an ICBM.

Also its not just the money developing these things, its the technology it is bloody hard shooting missles down at such a high speed.

Anyway why waste money on stuff like this.

It could potentially save millions of lives...

Don't we have some kind of tactical nuclear defence missile system? or the EU does or something...

If you look at the fuss Russia is kicking up over the propsed US missile defence system, then I hardly think Russia would let the EU put one up :) Or they'd be 'okay sure you can do that but we'll have to point all our nukes at you to 'neutralise' the threat, sorry' :P
