Odd ATI Driver Issue

Hey guys, I am in a dilemma. I have a 4870 ATI 512MB Sapphire which runs both ArmA and GTA 4 great. The only problem is that both programs need different drivers to run well.

For instance, ArmA runs excellent on Very High settings with the 8.8 Catalyst ATI Drivers. Whilst trying to run this in GTA4 causes it to crash. Using the 8.12 stops GTA4 Crashing but makes ArmA do this when playing on Very High ...

It seems to stop if everything is put to ultra low in ArmA, but I have wondered why this stops it. When clearly the card can handle it, is it something to do with the drivers?

I have checked the card in both instances and it runs at about 47* so the artifact is not from overheating. Also it is not the card dying as it only ever happens in ArmA when I'm not using 8.8 Drivers, never at any other time. Worse case is I have to keep switching between them but I would prefer a more permanent solution if one is available? Also I have tried 8.9,8.10, and 8.11 all of which cause my PC to BSOD. So any advice would be great, thanks :)

I could give you an idea but you probably wouldnt want to do it.

make a dual boot system
use 8.12s with the system that your gonna use all the time and make a os with just the bare essensials and that game with 8.8s installed

its worth a shot heh

your in a bit of a pickle :P

Aside from switching to NVidia there's not much you can do except hope that in the coming months AMD will release a driver where both games run equally well.

Aye, although I'm not keen on swapping a 4870 for a 280 :-| Is this sort of issue common with ATI drivers? Works excellent with one game and rubbish with another?

Go for a clean sweep on the drivers.

Remove all traces of your ati driver and reinstall 8.11... I see no reason why it shouldn't work, probably got some confliction issues.

I have, used CCleaner to totally remove any traces of the old Drivers and it still does it :-/
