Let me paint the picture.

I've currently got Sky+, paying £22 pounds odd a month for TV subscription.
Ive also got Sky Talk free line rental and talk option for 12 months (expiring at the end of the month).
My broadband is with Virgin (20MB) paying 19.50 a month.

I called Sky cancellations today who (long story short) have offered me.

Sky HD+ box for £99, waiving installation fee + upgrade to £30 TV subscription for 5 movie channels (which I can cancel next month/downgrade next month as I checked this with her).

Sky Talk rental fee waived (still negotiating the talk option when she calls back), for 12 months.

Sky Broadband 16MB for a tenner a month and usual free wireless router/Mcafee subscription for 12 months.


My two questions.

1. How does the above sound? Can I get something better with Virgin?
2. Do the sky engineers need to lay new cable for Sky HD+ ? or does HD+ use the same existing cables and dish as Sky+ did? (i.e. two coaxials) ?

The Sky HD will run on the same 2 cables as the existing Sky+ does.
 
It uses the same cables mate so will be straight forward, i got it recently for £75 half price.
Also had skys broadband max which is good but depends how far you are from the exchange with regarding speed. I am within 1 mile so i got the full 16mb, i recently changed tho to O2 broadband for £15 a month for 20Mb download and 2Mb upload.
 
check broadband before you move.

BT syas I should get 8-16mb but I Only get 4-6mb through sky..

Virgin still wins hands down for internet. I will be going back to virgin after my sky contract finishes.
 
w311zy can I ask how you managed to get the Sky HD+ box for half price? (presumably 75 pounds as you said?)

Actually just checking the Sky website it states £99 for the box for existing customers! Not much of a deal really for me is it!
(Aside from the waiver of 60 pounds set up fee).
 
A friend of mine has Sky internet and while it is quite good it is a huge step down from Virgin as AcidHell2 said.

Sky may be slower but they are truely unlimited (as unlimited as you get in the UK) without slowing speeds down over busy times of day, the total opposite of virgin.


I dont have either but that is my opinion from what I have read on here, so I may be wrong.

My fear is that the last time the sky guy came out, he couldnt do anything because he was a 1 man team and he needed a special support team with a double ladder or something.

Reckon I should request a special support team just incase?

Also Im interested in how W1z got his HD for £75.
The lady told me that the price is £99 and I thought that was an offer, but it seems to be the normality.
 
If in doubt ask sky. I know if you live in a flat above 2 stories or something then its not a 'standard' installation and the installers need to be aware of this and also they charge more. Sort it out before they arrive as it will just be more time wastage if indeed he is not prepared.

Even if you get throttled on Virgin 20MB it only goes down to 5MB which is still fast, but more importantly still consistent.

My experiences with Sky show that it slows down at peak time. My friend is on the 8MB package and hardly ever gets more than 4-5MB. Couple of people at work are also disappointed in its speed.

Guess it depends where you live and how lucky you get!

This is my thinking as well.

Choices choices. Argh.
 
Don't get the 16mb broadband, get the 8mb then upgrade to 16mb if you can get the speed. I got the 16mb package, was told by their tech-team I would only ever get 8mb but wasn't allowed to downgrade, they basically said to me on the phone the above is the way I should have done it.
 
Or B totally switch to one of virgins packages?

Thats what i'm doing at the end of the sky contract as unfortunately for me our signal goes in bad weather, and we can only get just short of 3meg downloads!!!
 
Argh... so many viewpoints :D

I was told that there is something about V+ that is technically not as good as Sky. Resolution perhaps? Not sure.
I was also told the menus on the Virgin box are sluggish?

Any clarification welcome :)

The Virgin menu is certainly no better and the box itself is slow. Sky HD is getting an upgraded menu soon too, so it can only get better. Lets not forget the massive HD advantage Sky have.

what the menu is 1000x better. I will be going back to virgin. Sky jsut pales in comparison on broadband and tv. Especially now virgin has got the sky channels back.
