I wouldn't describe Mansell as boring. May not have had the driving ability of others but pushed himself and his cars to the limit.
Indeed. Christ, Mansell is the man who ran his first race immersed in fuel, suffering chemical burns as a result. Mansell is the man who pushed his car over the line in Detroit one year, collapsing just as he got the car home. Mansell is the man who went from 12th on the grid at the frappin' Hungaroring and won. He's the man who raced while recovering from a pretty serious illness and ended up doing himself quite a bit of damage, who overtook Piquet with that maneuver going into Stowe corner at Silverstone, who went wheel-to-wheel with Senna at Barcelona and came out ahead, and who managed to earn the respect and adoration of both the notoriously fickle British F1 fan brigade and the Tifosi. This is not the hallmark of a boring man. This is the hallmark of someone who deserved every accolade he ever got, and a few more that he was denied.
And what has Hamilton done? Won some races and a title in a car that is the class of the field. Great. Super. Wonderful.
He might well become one of the greats....scratch that, he WILL become one of the greats. But he isn't yet.
