RAF scrambled to intercept Russian bombers.

Has no one noticed that the Government has delayed our new aircraft carriers, the Queen Elizabeth Class? That announcement was really quiet, appeared on the news once then just vanished.

No I certainly noticed that, however it's pretty understandable in the current economic climate, plus there are higher priority products the armed forces current need (IMO).

No it's say America designs a system which works say 99% of the time in intercepting missiles. this means Russia essentially has no nuclear arsenal, which means America could attack with impunity or vis versa.

which ever made the shield would be able to threaten or attack the other with almost no risk.

Bye bye MAD.

but providing the USA are responsible it doesn't matter, Russia would not dare launch an attack in that situation. All they could do would be to build there own defence system, so we'd be back to square one anyway.

Surely they want to be injecting some money/jobs in to the economy at a time like this though? I want my new aircraft carrier damn it...

:D

Type 45, Astute and QE2 are some of the best (if not the best of their class) in the world.... Pity their numbers are dwindling. ******* Labour!

You build and decide on military expenditure dependent on the threat, at the moment most western nations are more concerned with domestic security countering islamic extremist rather than a cold war era arms race.

sure but America would be more than willing to make demands of Russia, just like Russia would if it had the upper hand.

Of course. But I believe similar things were said before WW1..... and WW2... and the Falklands.

You should maintain a sizeable, maintainable and efficient force. Prepare for the worst, hope for the best.

That could be the reason. They are not reducing costs etc - they are just stringing it out for a longer period of time. Manufacturing will still begin in Spring 2009!

Already happening :(

Last week, for the first time since the end of the Falklands war, the Royal Navy has withdrawn its warship patrol around the Falklands, because of the requirements around the middle east and East Africa due to piracy.

We all know what happened last time they withdrew an RN ship from the Falklands.....

I thought HMS Clyde was stationed there?

(which isn't actually owned by the RN)

To be honest, I mean if it came down to it, we have nuclear IBCM's on board subs, what do they have?

We have Typhoons, Torandos and Harriers they have, erm nothing that isn't in storage? That'd be a quick fight

Anyone who thinks we (UK) could defend ourselves against Russia are simply deluded. Sure we are have a very large fighting force for the size of our country but come on, put things into perspective. Our forces, as well trained as they are would be no match for the might of Russia. Look back to the Gulf and now Afganistan. Our troops are still ill equipped (my brother had to beg some US marine for desert gear in the Gulf - that disgusted me tbh). Nuclear deterrents are our only salvation.

If Argentina invaded the Falklands again, there is no way we could possibly mount the force we had last time. In the last Falklands war we got VERY lucky, let's make no bones about it. IF it happened again I very much doubt it would have the same outcome. Were it not for the French agreeing not to sell to the Argentinians (instead selling there excocets to the UK at an inflated price and under considerable pressure) it would have been game over for the task force.

However, BOT, the Russians testing out our response times are nothing new, it's been going on for decades.
