I have nearly £1400 pounds to spend on a tower, have some ideas but need help

I Rec Asus P45, many Rec Gigabyte.

I was going to suggest SLI or Crossfire on a stick (ie 1 card 2 cores), but I do not rate either as 1 good card is enough for now.

Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4870 1024MB GDDR5 £218

do you think this is good enough tfor now and upgrade to a second one when things need more power

Im going for the Zalman cooler as it is only 1 degree warmer than the Thermalright but looks so much better to me. If you have any reason why not to use the Zalman then could you let me know.

Do you have any opinions on the gigabyte ga-ex58 ud5?

You really need to edit out the competitors in your post or you might get suspended.

Jesus, I never knew you needed a Screen, yes FGS sake use some of cash on a good 24" to get best out of a new GPU.

Building the I7 and using whatever you have now would prob be dumb and a total waste.

I think your right about the i7 and definitely about my current system,

The i7 is so much more expensive for not a huge amount of gain not too mention my doubts about possible problems
my old pc is so out of date and so unstable now I seriously need to replace it.
the psu fan rattles like mad at times too, its just an old dog thats had its day.

I dont need a screen as such I have twin 19" Monitors, but as im saving so much cash on the 775 solution I thought I might treat myself,

Something with 1920 x 1200 would look great and with this setup I should be able to run games at max res with really good settings, Just waiting for my new card to arrive from the bank, hopefully tomorrow and ill be ordering.

This is what im thinking of buying,

Quad Q9550 LGA775 'Yorkfield' 2.83GHz £229.99
Asus P5Q Deluxe P45 Socket 775 £146.89
Powercolor ATI Radeon HD 4870 1024MB £214.74
Corsair 4GB DDR2 XMS2 Dominator PC2-8500C5 TwinX (2x2GB) £91.99
Zalman CNPS9700-LED CPU Cooler 41.39
Samsung SpinPoint F1 HD103UJ 1TB Hard Drive £73.37
Antec 1200 Twelve Hundred Full Tower Case £121.99

Heatsink is crap IMO, get a Noctua or Thermalright True 120 or Tuniq or Arctic Freezer Extreme.

HDD I would get a WD Black or WD RE3 (both faster) over that (many F1's seems to be failing), and do you really need a 1TB HDD as your primary HDD ?

Perhaps a single 150 VelociRaptor for OS and WD Black 1TB for everything else?

Neil: What are you clocking aspirations? If you could stretch to a Q9650/E8600 and TRU 120 Extreme + Asus Maximus II Formula you should be able to get some serious 4Ghz + clocks :)

Ill take a look at a different cooler,

are the two drives you mentioned about the same?

I was going to partition the hd, but do you think it would be better to get multiole smaller drives,

What would you recommend, someone mentioned the solid state drives but there quite small , maybe one for the os, woul that make much difference

Id like to get as much out as i can, cant stretch to water cooling at the minute but iam thinking about that also.

hmm 4gig+ that sounds interestiing, depends on how much extra, ill have a look now

P.S. I think i will go for that cooler, Ill need a couple of fans for it, what size does it take

Dont think i could stretch to the chips you mentioned, a lot more expensive

A 1TB HDD as Primary is still just that even if partitioned, peeps normally use for Storage.

You do not need WC for 45nm CPU's to get 4GHZ out of a Quad and 4GHZ-4.5GHZ out of a Dual.

The WD Black and RE3 are about same speed, the RE3 is specially for Raid but does not mean cannot be used for single use.

Too new, Good Read but not so good Write unless you but a £££££££ one and even then there is issues.

Advise Mechanical HDD for now, also some experts say they do not run well in Vista, last week 1 manu said it ran better in Win 2000.

Ill definitely give them a miss until the technology is working better,

How much quicker are the 10k drives over the 7200

I'm no expert but with the new raptors you get two types of speed advantage. Firstly because the drive is spinning so fast you get faster seek times. The result is that your OS etc feels 'snappier'. The second advantage is obviously superior read/write speeds. Games load faster
