Hi, I'm looking at doing an upgrade for my old man, but the last time I looked at any of this stuff, The E4300 had just been launched and the Tunic Tower was king of air coolers. I see OCUK doing an LED version for ~£30, so thought that was a logical step, but thought I'd check with the guys in the know first?

Any thoughts?

EDIT: I've just won a P35 based DS3R, and I'm looking at an E6320/E6750 to go with it. Would like to keep things quiet, but also allowing overclocking if he wants to. I want to get him a good cooler, but have no interest in spending double to eek out 100Mhz...

how much would you be planning to overclock the processor as that can make a difference in what you get, but if you want to spend around £30 you got the tuniq, and the TRUE, or scythe infinity, all of which i would get if i was buying now

Well the DS3 was a good board for clocking in the i965 days, and I got an E4300 to 3ghz on that, and the ebay ad said that the seller had got 3.8Ghz for his E6750 (albeit with DDR3), so I want to go as fast as is stable and easy, by getting decent kit, upping the FSB, and be done with it.

Basically, I want to unlock the potential of the kit, but not spend hours eeking out the last drops of performance that in truth, he'll never use/notice anyway...

Any preference between the 3 coolers mentioned? Ballpark, how fast is stable and easy on the sort of setup I'm talking about?

Ok, what's a 'TRUE', and how is it it different from a 'TRUE+Fan'

How much, and why did you bother changing?

thermalright ultra extreme 120 or something like that, and they dont have a fan with them when you get them so you have to order one seperate.

I would personally go with the tuniq as i have had one before, and although it was a pain to install it provided good temps!

TRUE = Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme

And basically, they come without a fan so that you can choose your own, pretty much.

Cooling wise the Tuniq is ok if you want a no-nonsense, slap it on and get good temps kind of cooler. But for me the TRUE is just that bit better temp wise, and you can select a much more quality fan (at extra expense of course). I have a X3210 Quad that I intend to thrash within an inch of its life on my new shiny Asus Maximus Formula with Rampage Bios, so for me and air cooling the TRUE is the way to go.

Not to mention I've owned a TRUE before and they rock :)

So it's about £60-£70 by the time you've added a couple of fans then...

I think I'll stick to the Tuniq, and put the extra towards more ram or something...

Cheers guys... :)

Eh? You can pick up a TRUE for £30-£35 and then a fan is anywhere from £5-10??...

although it does add up more it is worth getting as they provide better cooling, however you may need to lap the TRUE as from what i have heard they arent too flat!

the true black with the extra mounting holes is £40, and 2 * decent fans at £10-15 is how I got to £60-£70...

What's a lap?

lapping is basically sanding the surface down to get it as smooth and flat as possible so you have the best contact surface you can get, meaning better cooling

You're kidding? £40 for something that's faulty?

How often has this been found?

quite common before apparently, i dont know that much on it though :p i know a lot of people with TRUE's had this problem though and had unstable temps before they did it, i dont know if this has been changed with the manufacturing now though

Dont bother with the Black version or dual fans, neither are needed, hence, what I specced. A £5 Zalman 120mm on its included fan resistor works extremely well and quietly.

Thinking about it, aren't all heatsink bases not perfectly smooth? That's why we use thermal compound isn't it? Is AS5 still the best for this?

How do you 'lap' it?

not all are perfectly smooth, and the use of thermal compound isn't to smooth out the surface it acts as a thermal transfer between cpu and heatsinc. AS5 is still up there, some people recommend Shin-etsu but in all honesty imo you are likely to see 1c difference either way if that.
