Decent mp3/music player?

Fair enough, thats all i wanted years ago, but i don't know things have advanced over the years and now i like my players to integrate themselves better with new services such as last.fm etc...

Integrate themselves better?

How do you mean? Winamp works fine with last.fm, for everything else except scrobbling then the website is fine, don't need it adding more bulk to the media player by being integrated.

I can't really be bothered going over the features again when you clearly don't know :p? But for instance MediaMonkey has an autoDJ that uses similar artists and/or tracks so like iTunes and other media players in party mode it rolling fills a playlist but with music suitable to whats already been played. Or for instance if i want to listen to an artist and have 3,4 or 5 albums but just want their vague "best" i can choose the artist hit top tracks and it checks last.fm for the top 10 played tracks and adds the to my playlist either in order or shuffle picked from the artists top chart. Many other things too, it can do whatever i want. But it makes choosing and playing music much easier and also lets you listen to your whole collection without going round the same circles you usually do.

Its just better alright? ;)

Another vote for Foobar2000 here. WinAMP sold out and is too bulky now.
Don't install the stuff you don't use then. There's a fair few modules/plugins I leave unchecked on install because they irritate me or I never use them. I know what you mean though.

Winamp can now try and find similar tracks to a given song, but it's pretty clunky and doesn't work to well. Itunes party mode is rather impressive in comparison.

@ OP, just try different players and see what you like - they all have different takes on the best way to implement a music library :)

Thing I love with foobar is you don't get any bulk by default. It's more complex but you can pick and choose what you want.

Pretty interface? if you want it.
Last.fm? if you want it.
etc etc

I leave mine nice and basic, with just last.fm as it does exactly what I want. The search also always seems much quicker than any player, and it functions properly with AISO, which I've had problems with in the past.

How exactly do I do this?

Just install the scripts if you want, thats the thing its obviously more bloated than foobar but if you want to leave it as standard then you can do that.

Personally i use:
Last.fm Node (is a very decent autoDJ and "genius" style playlsit generator better than anything iTunes have to offer)
SimilarArtists (does pretty much the same thing, but finds top tracks of artists that are similar rather than tracks that are similar)
TopTracks (Uses last.fm to find the top tracks of an artist)
AutoCrossfade (cross fades between tracks that aren't one after another on the same album)
GenreFinder gives my albums multiple genres based loosely on what albums have been tagged with most (from a whitelist) from last.fm
Obviously Last.fm scrobbler scrobbles to last.fm thats pretty basic though evreything should support that :p
AutoRateAccurate (gives ratings to my songs based on loads of factors from how often i play or skip sections of them total play time how long theyve been in my library time since last play etc... its amazing)

Theyre just the few extensions i use, check the extensions forum of mediamonkey and tbh you can do almost anything you want... This is where songbird wants to head but hasn't got there yet it just has better advertising and fanbase :)

I've been using MediaMonkey but recently noticed that the music out of it sounds dull when even compared to - dare I say it Media Player  I know it's becuase Media Player has some EQ stuff switched on by default but is there some sort of recommended list of settings or plugins that I should be using?

Never noticed that at all, you've messed up somewhere mine all sound identical (i use foobar and mediamonkey depending), have you accidentally switched on the EQ with some stupid setting?

No idea to be honest, sounded fine in XP with my SB Live sound card, moved over to Vista x64 and had to use the on board sound as there are no drivers for the Live in Vista x64, this is the first time I noticed it sounded dull. Was convinced it was the on board sound so went out and got a second hand Audigy 2ZS and it still sounds the same. I've checked the settings and everything looks like it's set to default.

Foobar :).

Much better now they've started shipping it with a fairly decent config. I spent days getting mine set-up just before they released it as well :D.

Hot damn I love the style of Songbird and on top of that the media keys work with my Logitech keyboard so I can play music whilst I game without having SB window on top :D
