Hey I'm going out to dinner tonight and need a decent restaurant in dundee! I really wanted to try Rancho Panchos as its supposed to be really good and we both love mexican food but i had a look today and all the lights are off with no indication as to why it migth be closed. any suggestions for other restaurants around the city centre? The italian is good.. thats my backup so far.

cheers. Joe

The Mandarin Garden on South Tay Street is decent enough for Chinese, you could also think about The Playwright on the same street, I've not been personally but mates who have said it was great. No idea if you can book either this late in the day though.

- Dunno if the food's as good as the others.

Don't ask me... I'm not from Dundee!

But seriously, why don't you have a look around and see wheres busy? where looks good? Where's got a good atmosphere?.. They are all good signs :p

I was in the same situation a while back - Dundee seems to have a distinct lack of places to eat compared to Edinburgh & Glasgow. There's not even a pizza express anymore.

We ended up going to the Italian.

even when you take it in proportion though, there's absolutely nothing in dundee - there's what? 3 suggestions in this thread?

There's probably more places I'd like to go in Perth than in Dundee.

If yer_averagejoe was happy to head up the Perth Road then it becomes a lot easier as there are a few nice places up there too but he asked for pretty central restaurants. The DCA isn't too bad if you are starting at the bottom of the Perth Road although the service can be a bit slow. Heading down Roseangle you've got Laings (one of the relatively few beer gardens in Dundee too) and near the bottom there is Antonios which is good authentic Italian food.

You're right it isn't exactly spoilt for choice but it isn't completely terrible either, you might just happen to know the good places to eat in Perth a little better.
