Fuji Heavy Industries, the maker of Subaru cars, are to pull out of the world rally championship citing the global economic crisis.

Subaru joins fellow Japanese automaker Suzuki Motor Corp, which announced its exit a day earlier, and leaves no other Japanese automaker left in the race.

Carmakers all over the world are under severe pressure to reduce spending as they bleed cash due to a sudden downturn in global car demand.

Honda Motor Co, Japan's number two automaker, this month quit Formula One racing for similar reasons.

Sad day if its true, but not utterly surprising.

They've struggled for a few seasons, and now they've spent loads of money on the new car just as the WRC announce rule changes.

They've been doing nothing except throwing Impreza's into the scenery since the glory days of 2003 anyway.

WRC is boring now, it's a Citroen beating a grid full of Fords.

Question is ... are they simply out till 2010, to save money for 1 year before fielding an s2000 spec car ... or are they out for good?

I know that the WRX is more group N rather than S2000, however I feel they can possibly mod it to s2000 regs.

Well Loeb will be gone so at least there will be a new champion.

If Citroen offer enough £££ he'll stay I bet.

EDIT:

Actually I just realised something, isn't part of the S2000 regs that they have to use a spec. tranny?
Subaru would NOT like that, so maybe they really are pulling out.
