Windows Mobile 6.1 - Thoughts?

Did you stop the device from doing its network customisations when it first booted? Its the golden rule on these devices.

It takes 2 minutes, and the device is twice as quick :)

See this is my point really, why should you have to do this? And if it is this easy to correct the horrendous inadequacies of WinMo why the hell don't they ship them all like this? This kind of fix defines WinMo for me, and until Microsoft sort their act out with it, i have little time for it.

ITS NOT MS FFS. Its the providers who bodge their own customisations onto the device when you buy it from them. MS provides the perfectly decent base OS. Then Orange/O2/Voda, whoever put on bits of software, crappy plugins, and radio changes.

When you stop all these, you see the OS/Device as MS/HTC intended.

It is so easy to jump on the "Lets bash MS" when it comes to WinMo. HTC and WinMo devices are given such a bad name by providers because they screw them up with poorly tested (if at all) changes and software.

To be fair, there's probably an equal number of people de-branding their Symbian phones.

Operators have a habit of adding lots of ****ware and holding back software updates.

Love my Tytn. Ive got SPB mobile shell running on it which goes someway to hiding its age. But once you get past the looks factor and learn your way around it, I dont see a more functional OS on the market currently, Symbian is the only competitor really imo, which again I like a lot.

Sorry i disagree with you on that one...i had the HTC Touch Diamond...had one since day of release and it was sim free...it was still utter rubbish...slow and full of stupid little bugs. Hell even after putting a custom made rom on it, it still sucked eggs. Thankfully a week ago i lost it on my way home and i now have the Blackberry Bold which is much much better.

Fair enough a lot of the operators ruin the phone itself but having spent a lot of time over at xda, even people who were running network branded phones but had de-branded them were still moaning about the phone itself.

Personally i dont think very much of M$ as a mobile platform...perhaps Winmo 7 will be better but honestly i dont think it will be all that much better...but whos knows when it will be out. Personally id rather go back to Symbian than have another Winmo phone but saying that i dont think ill be going to another non BB device. Ive had mine for a week now and i still cant put it down..

Exactly, vanilla Windows Mobile OS is perfectly fine, it can do the basic things that iPhones can't (eg forward SMS, MMS etc) and my personal favourite as an enterprise email platform.

Malt although i agree that operators seemingly like to break their phones, its not just that. Windows mobile IS slow unless you're running it on mega hardware (comparitively to symbian) its just not well produced. And to top it off vanilla WinMo is a UI nightmare, its was never designed with any type of ease of use in mind. You have to fiddle with it loads to get it in anyway shape of form half decent to use.

WinMo 7 really probably will change all this as the goalposts Microsoft use have changed a lot this the first WinMo was released, WinMo 6.1 hasn't really changed very much at all since the early days, its stuck in a time warp.
