M40 fun last night - anyone else get stuck in it?

Someone needs to teach people to drive.

And why is it that there is ALWAYS a lorry or truck involved in a crash?

Don't tar them all with the same brush, i've seen many a car driver pull a dodgy move in front of a truck/lorry expecting them to have the same manuverability and braking distance as them... all i've seen so far have been lucky but then you read the news and some aren't.

Yeah, there's idiots on both sides.

I recall when I commuted up and down the A38 every day, some woman in outside lane, just getting a car length past an artic in the nearside (she outside, as is proper), sees that Pizza selling restaurant and just swerves straight in front of the lorry. I happened to be half way through passing the lorry and if it weren't for that bit of road having a dirty gap between road and central reservation i'd have been a lot thinner as the lorry swerved all over the shop.

yay!

Had my own private party thanks to Mr iPod.

Twiddled my thumbs.

Twiddled my thumbs some more.

Helped to jump start a Jag XJ - the owner didn't even know which end was the bonnet  :D

Got RSI from excessive thumb twiddling.

I wasn't even in an Orange 3G cell, so surfing from my phone or laptop was stupidly slow.

Wow that sucks. What on earth did you do for 5 hours?

Wasn't in that one thankfully but I've been in that situation. You'll usually get people wandering up and down the motorway and actually talking to each other, failing that since I had the Car PC installed I mostly passed the time with ZSNES and Mario Kart :) A laptop would've done ok too providing you have one of those ciggy lighter chargers for it.

A PC is going in my car asap in the event of this situation.

Essential Car Equipment:

laptop
charger
Xbox
37" plasma where the rear seats used to be
fridge
some internets

I'll whack those on the Christmas list i think!

I got stuck for 7 hours on the M6 once, in a company mini which had nothing in it.... I was bored stiff. Talked to a few people and then went to sleep for a bit.

That's silly, you'd have to sit in the boot to use the plasma and installing an old XBox would likely adversely affect the handling, unless you put it over the back axle of an RWD car. (yes it's nearly 2009 and I just made an XBox is really huge joke. Sue me)

The rest of the stuff though does come with me on most car trips though. I love my 12V fridge and work-funded Vodafone 7.2mbps HSDPA dongle with 5 gigs a month!

Just need to rearrange the car PC on the next install such that the soundcard is further away from where I plug in the Vodafone dongle. The interference makes it unusable.

Do you have a guide for such a CarPC setup?

I would SO have a spare joypad or 2 in the glovebox for USB connection and emulated gaming in situations like that!

There's a thread on here, "HDD in the boot" or something like that where I've posted about mine, alternatively www.digital-car.co.uk is a good resource or if you can't be bothered to build your own, just buy a double din Infill G4 for about £850.

And yes you've pretty much described my setup there, a pair cheap digital-only copies of the original Playstation pad and some emulators.

I missed the incident on the M40 last night, thankfully.

Yes, many car drivers who simply have no clue as to a truck, its weight, stopping distance, space required on the road & its many blind spots.

And why is it that there is ALWAYS a lorry or truck involved in a crash?

HGV's are not always involved in accidents, alas, when one is involved, usually, the consequences for other road users around it is bad / fatal and this is why it gets into the press.

Is a Lorry not a Truck anyway? :p

There was a HGV stopped at the crash site on the M40 when I finally crawled past. Written in the dirt on the back doors was "Your skid stops here"...

I got stuck on the A34 on the afternoon of the floods in July 2007. Stationary near Newbury for 2 hours, then eventually succumbed to the queue on the A34 just north of the M4 junction. Tried to find a way round, but all the country roads were blocked solid. Ended up sitting on a little slip road for 7 hours.

9 hours stationary in total. The journey from Winchester to Bedford took 11 hours, and all I had was the radio for company, no ipod, laptop etc.

That's crazy horses. However I just got iPlayer working on my phone so I think I am not in such a dire situation any more!
