Be* - Not a good start, any advice?

If it's not broke why fix it?

It possibly *is* broke - the OP is having problems and trying a different router will at least allow him to find out whether or not the router is the problem. If it makes no difference you can rest happy, knowing that the BeBox won through to fight another day.

Aside from that, sync speeds and line stability are often better with the alternative routers/modems (DG834 range with broadcom chipset, AM200 modem, etc).

You're on a fairly tech-savvy forum, surely you know that swapping out devices/components is often the best way to troubleshoot a problem?

RE: BeBox's if the Bebox and other routers supplied by ISPs were any good the market for aftermarket routers would fall through. It's currently very strong because most ISPs offer naff routers. Most Function to the basic level required to connect a PC to the net but on pretty much all of them advanced features are either absent or bugged.
My advice to the OP would be to look up the recommended chips for connecting the your DSLAM equipment and buy a modem with that in + cable router. That way you can upgrade the router to do what you want without worrying about it having a good modem in it. IIRC I think people are recommending broadcom modem hardware for Be. there should be some threads about it on here somewhere.

This is assuming the router is to blame. Which it looks like it is as with most cases of unexplained dropouts with the line remaining in sync. Borrow a mates first to test.

the bebox isnt very reliable tho.....i used to have problems when playing css online.
after so long of play i would get a fair bit of lag.....on the same system which was fine with zens provided box or virgin media's.
after a bit of googling i found out that the bebox has a tendancy to overheat.....placing it on its side or upside down helps.

a quick way of checking if its heat related is to point a fan at it and see if u still get problems

I left it on the balanced settings for the first 5 hours to get a picture of the number of errors on the line any if there were any dropouts. After I decided it was perfectly fine I upped it to the speed profile with gamer mode enabled, sync speed increased and ping times lowered but error stats were within tollerance.

Your line could have been ok and stable until you changed the setting to gamer mode/speed profile rendering it unstable.

Set it back to standard profile for now until Be* check your line or whatever discussion you had with them.

Have you changed your line profile in your members centre????

Optimise for speed
Standard setting
Optimise for reliability
Gaming mode on / off

Mine is set for speed, but because your's is a new line I suggest you set it to 'optimise for reliability'

Sorry to hijack but could someone explain the differences? or link me to somewhere that does explain this as I didn't even know about this setting until reading this thread? Also do the settings still have effect with using a different router? i.e. Netgear DG834GT

Had to laugh. They mean what they say.

Optimise for speed - increases speed
Standard setting - standard profile setting
Optimise for reliability - decreases speed but line more stable
Gaming mode on / off - for gamers

Sorry was pretty vague yes i speak english and understand those meanings, however i'm interested in what the gamer mode does? Also will these settings still work under a different router? I assume they would but just checking.

They do indeed mean what they say, but the poster clearly wanted a more technical definition rather than you just changing the order of the words to "explain"...

The OP should also try to set it back to reliability, but even if that resolves the problem it's worth trying a different router as some BeBoxes just don't like fastpath or marginal lines, whereas other routers will often be able to deal with it.

Optimise for speed - lowers target SNR margin, increasing sync speed but possibly making line unstable (losing sync often)
Standard setting - 'medium' target SNR - should be stable on most lines and provide reasonable speeds
Optimise for reliability - Higher target SNR which should make line more stable, lower sync speed.
Gaming mode on / off - Off = Interleave mode (line stability but higher pings) On = fastpath mode (possibly less stable line but lower pings and on good lines, higher sync speed)

Wikipedia has definitions of fastpath, interleave, etc.

I'm optimised for speed but have fastpath switched off as it made the system slightly unstable. My attenuation is high.

Oh, and I ditched the Be box.

where are these settings? had a good thorough look through my BE member centre and can not see it at all

i had similar issues , turned out the to be the free router they give you over heating ( might be diffent as this was 16months ago) all i did was stick it on its side and it was fine ever since best ISP i ever had after that ) do remmber some peeps modding theres by sticking a 40 to 80mm fan on the under side lol

My Speedtouch 510v4 sits directly above a radiator and is getting on for 7 years old. never have issues with it and it's passively cooled. They just don't make em like they used to.
