There's a voice that keeps on calling me.
Hi guys, currently weighing up new cars at the mo.I noticed with the new Golf you can get a TSI 160bhp engine, anyone got one? im also looking at the 170bhp Diesel,If I do go Golf then it will be a DSG GT version, again any opinions on the DSG gearbox.

Its gonna be a company car, and for the price ive been offered the golf, it makes sense to consider them, Im also looking at a Merc C180k or the Accord GT, but they are at the top end of my budget, unfortunately as i now need 4 doors and a decent boot,

The Merc! Fantastic car! What trim level is it?

/end

on a more serious note, the power delivery on the TDI I would expect to be more linear than the TSI, but I havent driven them, I would DEF suggest a test drive if you can, bust into the dealer pretending to buy!

Its just the basic SE, but they seem reasonably specced, the Accord is my preferred choice at the mo,the ES GT looks quite smart, and its well specced.

The golf is the cheapest option for me, but the new one, looking at the pics, is a bit meh.

Pity Audi dont do the A3 with the 160bhp TSI yet:(

Im currently weighing up options, by all accounts the Merc is pretty good to drive but im guessing its gonna be a bit on the slow side? Ive got a few test drives lined up so time will tell.

You'll forget about speed when driving in the merc - it's a nice place to be, as opposed to the poverty spec bland wagon.

It depends what you'd like to have. It's 155bhp IIRC? Which for average pootling around isnt bad. But it's not great either and wont put a smile on your face, especially in a car which is quiet and calm on the inside.

Mate at work has the C180? The supercharged coupe version. Really nice car and the trim level in his is very nice.

Is the Merc the C Class or the CLC?

If the former, very very good cars. If the latter, more dire than a dire thing in a dire factory

I dont understand why you would even consider the Golf when the C is on the list. The Golf is a Focus class hatch, the C is a proper compact executive saloon.

The C costs me a hell of a lot more than the Golf, I really fancy building a track toy at the mo, and If I go for the Golf It frees up a nice chunk of cash for that.

E class are pretty damn cheap if its a personal lease (much cheaper than a C), maybe and old model but its miles better than a golf imho.

Shame my old man picked an IS220d above the E as he "never had a lexus" :(

my dad had the c230k version of that a few years ago...it was quite nice to be in but liked breaking. It also had a healthy appetite for front suspension bushes

looks like you have already made your choice - golfs are fantastic cars especcially the diesel ones - i thrash mine about every day and it uses practically no fuel compared to our other cars - do about 50 to 100 miles a day

What is the DSG version if I may ask?

In basic terms is just like an auto box, but works in a different way, It has two clutches, one for gears 1,3,5 and another for 2,4,6 i think.
And the gear change is so smooth its crazy. You also have a semi position aswell as a sport position where the engine revs for longer and higher.

I myself think the golf gt is a very nice ride, And the torque is quite something because its a diesel

You're going to get bent over and have nasty things done to you on company car tax regardless of your choice.

If you're driving big miles (which is pretty much the only reason to get a company car from an accounting perspective) then get the one which is most comfortable. Believe me, it makes a massive difference.

Im being tempted back to the C now, ive arranged for a long term test drive in Jan, see how it goes.

Ive ditched the new Golf idea, its just too similar to the old one tbh.
