Sky HD+

hi sorry for the late reply, i just rang up about a month ago and asked for the best deal and thats what they did for me. i cant reccommend sky hd + enough, i love hd content...its awesome.

Hmm is it true you have to change something on the dish itself to receive HD?

Only if you don't already have standard Sky+
Sky+ to SkyHD+ is a simple box swap - hence why most people really don't think the £60 installation is fair.

HD content is great - just a shame there isn't enough of it at the moment!

ATM Sky have the Upperhand with HD content but their HD sports and Movie channels are likeyl to be made available to Virgin soon like they have to Provide the SD versions of the channels. Virgin are also turning off their Analogue services this should allow them to have room for 30-40 HD channels very soon.

Are you sure stoofa? I spoke to a friend who said when he went from + to HD+ the Sky crew had to change the LNBs on the dish?

No idea why that would be. I would suggest your friend is either talking rubbish, or kept his Sky+ box and went multiroom, which would require a quad LNB rather than a dual.

Shouldn't have to do that, but even if they do, why does it matter? It's a simply 5 minute job, if that.

Sorry but make sure you get a Sky +HD box because the old Thompson ones have an inherant fault. The best ones are Siemens and Pace. They are fast and smooth. The Thompsons chug along like an old cable box and more than ever they shutdown for no reason and love getting the Green screen.
If they lie to you tell them you are going to cancel the contract and they will soon cough up A SKY+HD box from Pace at least.
As for your LMB You could have the wrong dish even though you may have the correct LMB. Or vice versa. Usually they want to get it over and done with as quickly as possible but don't let them get away with it as this is a new contract and a new installation and you are paying for it.

As far as I am aware Siemens do not make Sky HD boxes - Samsung do. I have a Samsung HD box and its superb.

There is an issue with upgrading the Hard Drives in the Samsung HD boxes (if that is something you are going to consider).
Only a few choice HD's seem to work in the Samsung units where as the Pace/Thompson boxes will take more or less anything upto 1TB (500GB+ you have to format outside of the box).

OOOPs! Sorry. I meant Samsung. But the other trustworthy make is PACE. And yes they are fast and smooth. To check ut your Thompson piece of rubbish try out one of the interactive games and you will be presented with the famous Green screen much like the old Windows Blue screen of Death. Once this happens you have to power it down and unplug the thing for 2 minutes to get it working as normal again.
The Thompson ones also forget to stop recording sometimes and often power down without reason. They are the Plague in HD viwewing.

i am going to look into Hard drive upgrades very soon so will keep you posted with the samsung box.

There is a thread over at AV Forums about upgrading the HD.
At the moment there are three known working drives:

Samsung 1TB (Check exact model number)
Seagate 750GB (Must be from the DB35.3 family, the 320GB drive supplied is also from this family)
Seagate 500GB (Again from the DB35.3 family - extremely rare this drive as it has been discontinued, so expect to pay a premium)

These are the only confirmed working drives for the Samsung.
Many have tried numerous WD 500GB - 1TB, Seagate 500GB - 1TB, etc all without luck.
Symptom is box reboots itself every 5-10 minutes.

My fear is that the last time the sky guy came out, he couldnt do anything because he was a 1 man team and he needed a special support team with a double ladder or something.

Reckon I should request a special support team just incase?

Also Im interested in how W1z got his HD for £75.
The lady told me that the price is £99 and I thought that was an offer, but it seems to be the normality.

There was an offer that ended on the 1st of december that was half price Sky HD

i got it too and the price was £75 instead of the normal £150.

Im presuming that due to the fact they have a 1 month + lead time for engineer installs, they've reduced the offer to reduce demand.

I ordered way back in the beginning of november, but didnt get an engineer to install till 5th of Dec.

i already had a Quad LNB for Sky + and multiroom, and a fairly recent one at that as we got a new LNB when we moved into the house about a year ago. We didnt need an LNB swap when we got sky HD

Thanks will have a butchers :D

The LNB issue is a recent one, especially for those who live in flats. Because of the high amount of rainfall over the last year and a half LNB's have been hit the hardest. the problem lies in the setup and distribution of the signal. As you know a little rainfall can cause a small breakup in picture quality but with the amount we've been getting the year old dishes look like 30 year old dishes left in the sink and not cleaned. Rusted adjusters and poor mounting can be others so at least have it checked.
