Why do some customers think they can **** you off?

It's like when sometimes I goto a chippy and say bag of chips please. .. and they say - 'yeah couple of minutes for the chips' WTF! your're a bleedin chippy you sell chips .how can you not have any chips to sell.

If you go during a quiet period, thats understandable, you don't want cold chips do you?

They have holding compartments where they put food after cooking before it served. This keeps the food warm. Also, if I'm there it's not a quiet period so that's no excuse. We're talking chips, not a 20 course buffet meal....

I'm actually glad I don't work in a customer facing role at the moment. Boring and mind-destroying as this job may be, it is far less of a trial every day\night..

The "holding compartment" is still hot enough to carry on cooking the stuff though... if no one came in for an hour they'd need to keep throwing chips away.

but about the OP... I'm sure a lot of people do it so you'll get ****** off with them and shout. Then they'll have some bait to run to your manager with in the hope of getting a discount.

You obviously have no clue on how to run a fish and chip shop.

As a customer that's not really my problem, I couldn't care less.

So let's say they have no customers, I come in - How many chips do they cook? Just a portion? Or more? I don't work in a chippy so I wouldn't know.

Also, freshly cooked chips are inferior to chips that have been sat for 10 minutes, IMHO.

Clearly u have no clue! you sound like 99% of the **** we have to deal with in retail.

People do not want old reheated chips that have been stood in a tray for 10 minutes, well certainly not people who enjoy quality chips.

I don't either so I'm not sure. It's like anything though, keeping loads of stock which isn't being shifted quickly enough is bad for business.

Then that keeps everyone happy; the majority who like freshly cooked chips can have them fresh and people like you can sit on your chips for 10 minutes before eating them.

Nobody said anything about reheating. Hell if the chippy is smart he can cook the chips for the first half of their cooking, and then finishing them off when the order comes in..? If throwing away some chips that have been sitting there for an hour is a problem for the chippy, then the dude has got bigger problems than throwing away some chips. Like where's his customers?

Yup. Also the reasons why it's not getting shifted quickly enough are bad for business as well.

don't get this reply.

Also, may not have been clear, but I wan't talking specifically about walking into an empty chippy and being told to wait for chips. It happens too frequently when the chippy is busy as well.

In that case, do you not understand that the chippy may be limited in terms of capacity of his frying range? You really have no idea in how this works do you?

Tell me how it works instead of trying to patronise me.

As a customer, I DON'T CARE how it works, all I care about is getting my chips, as fast and as easy as possible. If I didn't care about that, I would do it myself.

I hate retail jobs like that, its horrible having some cretin with the I.Q. of a piece of toast giving you a hard time but that's what you get paid for.

You get paid for offering tech support/advice. You certainly don't get paid for getting an ear bashing or abuse from some stuck-up customer. I work for an ISP as tech support and I used to let it really get to me. Now, I give it back as good as I get.

Just who the **** do they think they're talking to. I'm a human being there to help them!

If you don't care how it works, then maybe that is where the problem is? Frying things take time, often when shops are really busy, they will be limited in the production side of things (few pans in the range), which means people may have to wait for more chips to be fried. Most good shops will try and be as fast as possible but people still have to wait, you need to accept this. Even in our shops, which are amongst the best in the country, require people to wait sometimes.

OK let me make it a little clearer for you.

Most people like freshly cooked chips ie chips that have just come out of the fryer. The chip shop owner is serving you because it is his business (that's a money making operation), therefore he wants to keep the majority of his customers happy so that they return and give him more business. This majority are happier to wait a minute or two for fresh chips than have chips that have been standing around for 10 minutes. Therefore this majority will keep coming to this chip shop as they like the way their chips taste when they receive them. This makes the chip shop owners business more successful and he makes more money.

Do you want him to take a cut in income just to keep people like you happy, especially considering you can sit on your chips for 10 minutes if that's the way you like them? You can make your chips 10 minutes old but you can't make 10 minute old chips fresh.

OK. I understand that. I even prefer to have my fish fried right there while I wait. I don't mind waiting for that, freshly fried fish is 1000x better than soggy old fish that's been sat there. But As far as I'm concerned these places are chip shops. It's what they do. The most basic product they supply. They should always be able to supply chips then and there. If they can't there is a problem somewhere.... not enough fryers. not enough staff, too many customers etc etc... but that's not my problem to solve.

It's not a problem at all, people do not want old dry chips, if they did then there would not be a problem on your part. I think you need to change your expectations. Every single person will wait (they often won't) for good quality chips so I refuse to see it as a problem, it may be for you but you may just be a very hard person to please.
