Oil service - using a pump

Not as though you have to buy one each time though, thats £43...once :) Well worth it imo for not having to go under the car or get your hands dirty at all.

For the CTR, you really need to take a wheel off to get to the filter properly so this would be pretty pointless. I expect it's got limited applications for most cars.

I'd also be worried about the lifetime of the sump plug and washer as they're designed to be replaced yearly I would assume. Probably not an issue but if the car has it's oil pumped all its lifetime is there a chance they'll deteriorate?

so you have to get under the car anyway? seems even more pointless now

Perhaps on your engine..my merc filters are accessed through a lid on the top of the engine, you unscrew that and pull the filter out by its handle. Pop a new one in and job done. Agreed its pointless on an engine where the filter is under the car.

In my experience, you pump most of it, and then let the rest drain normally to make sure it's all out. Pumping just removes the need for a huge container to be under your car, and the trouble associated with collecting 5-6 litres of oil and then not spilling it. You still stick a small, more managable container underneath to get the rest of the oil that comes out from the sump.

Not sure what you're on about with the sump and plug though.

I think I'll invest in one of these as long as I can access the filter from the top. With regards to the plug and washer I think its just the tightening that can damage them so for a few pennies its best to stick a fresh one in each time. As long as it just sits there I can't see it coming to any harm.

They are supposed to be changed when disturbed not because they have a life limit on them.

I use a pela...or pela style...£30 from screwfix.

They are very simple and so easy to use. Just pop the very thin tube down the dipstick into the sump pump away for 10 secs and it will fill the pump bottle up. After maybe 5/10 mins. May need another pump just depends, but can be left alone whilst you do something else.

The tube can be used when the oil is hot and its impossible to lose anything in your sump....unless the engine was on...lol. And agree with above sump plugs only need replacing because you have removed them and the washer will not seat good next time.

I heard somewhere this is what Mercedes do on some/all their cars. Could have been idle gossip tho :)

I believe it's the only way to get the oil out of a smart. Never actually did a change myself when Vix had hers but I'm sure I read it somewhere.

I'm suprised you're not provided with a butler who does it all for you on your driveway :p

 The cars get serviced at the main dealers, i was just saying how the layout is on them which makes these devices very handy should you want to change the oil yourself.

Let me know how that goes nick, i might well grab one if they are any good as i'd like to change the oil more often than the main dealer does it with the s-class getting on a bit now.
