Mountain Biking, Blew Budget on Bike, So...

Presuming that you're on the smallest cog at the front as well, then you're putting the chain under a lot of sideways strain, which can sometimes make it skip. Try and find a similar ratio gear where the chain is more in-line and see if it still skips.

it seems to skip when im accelerating from a lower speed. on a slightly easier to pedal ratio. then when its hard slow pedal movements its fine.

Not used many other brakes then? ;)

Maybe bigger better brakes make sense if you weigh more, but I can lock up the front wheel one fingered off road/pull a stoppie on road without pulling amazingly hard. The only thing you need beyond pure power is modulation and the Juicys have plenty of that.

Not as blinging as a nice Hope set though :P

I have Juicy 3's on my XC bike and Juicy Ultimate’s on my AM bike and there is a very noticeable difference between them. It's not just about being able to lock up wheels with one finger ;) Heck, you can do that with cheapo rim brakes.

Ultimate's feel so much better, like they would stop a train, which gives me so much more confidence to go fast(er) on down sections.
One downside though is the pads seem to wear out much quicker; pads on the 3's last about 500 miles but the same pads on the Ultimate's are only lasting about 100-120 miles.

Brake less :P

Well said. If you're very draggy on your brakes you'll wear them down faster.

And for anyone that says Juicys are crap, I've got a set of 2006 Juicy 5s on my Enduro, and I spent 20 quid getting a 203mm rotor and adaptor and they've suddenly become amazing!! MTB Direct for the rotor if you're interested.

Juicys are fine for power, they can just be a wee bit high maintenance, though I gather they've fixed that now. Mate's got them on his ridiculous Carrera Banshee (a full suspension steamroller) and they're spot on when they're freshly bled, really decent... But they need bled more often than even my own cheap-n-cheerful Tektro Auriga Comps, as though there's some part that's slightly porous or a seal that's not quite perfect.

I'm not up to date with what's good these days... What's recommended these days for trail centre/XC use? Ideally I'd want something reasonably light, not too expensive, and reliable... Totally lost with all the options. This is for an On-One Scandal but with a generally fairly heavy build, so probably 12kg or so, and a 60 kilo cowardly rider :D But I'm a brake-dragger so nothing too featherlight I think...

Locking = bad ;)
I want modlation

No one said the range of Juicy's are crap, the 3's are pants. I have no experience with the others, but from what I hear the 7's and ultimates are amazing

Can't fault my Juicy 7's, modulation is superb, and I reckon they'd stop a train. :D

I reckon the Juicys that sup3r tried were broken, modulation is great on my 3s too! The Hayes nines on my commuter however are *poo*.

Badgerpoo, you might want to edit out the swearing there. :) I've heard a few people say that Hayes have or perhaps I should say had a very on or off feel to them as I don't know anyone using them now.

That might be the case, you never know. Mine was pants on the SX trail I bought, and so were my Brother in law's, who got his on the Pitch Pro he bought.
