annoying road users who pay no attention to pedestrians

Walking home today, went to cross the road. White van was coming up to the corner of the road I was crossing but as he hadn't indicated, I assumed it was safe to cross and so I started to. Next thing I know, he turned the corner on the wrong side of the road, on his mobile, and had to brake sharply to avoid hitting me. Then, he had the nerve to beep at me and speed off.

****ing hate people like this.

Pointless thread I know, but needed to rant. :p

Edit: ^^^^ Assuming the OP was crossing a side street, he did have right of way having moved onto that street at all. I'll freely admit that having right of way doesn't always mean it's wise to cross but seriously if you're going to wait until the main road is completely clear of cars before you cross a side street, you'll be waiting a long time.

White van... mobile phone... don't think many people will be coming to defend this guy. :)

Probably wasn't paying attention to where he was, let alone where he was going, figured it out half way through the junction and decided to just hoof it around the corner rather than have to turn around somewhere.

The only mistake you made was in expecting a white van to use it's indicators at all. :P

When crossing a minor road, pedestrians have right of way over traffic turning into that road after that have begun to cross.

Who has the right of way means nothing until you make your court appearance in your snazzy new wheelchair to see the guy get a one year ban. Best to use your noggin and keep yourself out of trouble rather worrying about who is in the right.

I assumed

The first thing my driving instructor told me then we began the actual lesson was to NEVER assume when it comes to other people on the roads.

10+ years of driving has made me realise that he was right to make it the first thing to learn.

I try to think that all road users will behave like idiots until they prove otherwise.

Never assume, you'll get squished.

You had a wise instructor. :)

Assumption is a dangerous thing around any vehicle, be it a Van or an Eddie Stobart truck.... ;)

So true, but yes drivers who pay no attention to pedestrians annoy the hell out of me and I'm rapidly coming to think of people who use mobile phones while driving as utter scum.

Last time something like this happened to me was in a similar situation, but the van driver didn't slow down at all. It was dark, and whipped my cameraphone out and snapped his reg when he had passed, making sure flash was on so he would have seen it in his mirrors.

Never did anything with it like :(

Another victim of government propaganda, what a shame.

Most research out there shows that it's the conversation, not the act of holding the phone that creates the risk because a phone conversation is more taxing on the brain than a conversation with someone sat next to you, and because the caller doesn't know what's going on around the car and thus doesn't know to shut the hell up if anything more complicated than just straight line cruising should happen.

It's frustrating to see a worthless ban that wont solve anything when the actual solution is just to ask the caller to hang on a sec if you need to actually do anything. Plus if you are planning ahead far enough you can explain why they should hang on before starting your manoeuvre. "Hang on a sec while I overtake this lorry" .... "ok sorry about that, where were we?" it's really not that hard.

Of course I can guarantee that the worst offenders of mobile phone driving stupidity (white van men and school run mums) do not do anything of the sort. At least when they were allowed to hold the phone in their hand you could see them coming and prepare your contingency plan.

I have a conference facility in my car, beams up onto the windscreen. It's ace, I got it from Politicaly Correct Isnt UK Limited.

school mums and white van men? The majority of mobile phone users I see are middle aged and young blokes driving rep mobiles.

Anyone older has a Bluetooth headset permenantly glued to their ear. Just incase someone rings. While they're wandering round the supermarkeet.

By worst offenders I meant the ones most likely to exhibit terrible driving as a result of their mobile phone use. The sales reps are usually pretty experienced at doing it so their driving standard doesn't change much as a result of the phone converstation

(not arguing that sales reps actually drive well, BTW)
