Deadline of 31st of may has been set for completion of any operational forces and then a 2month period of withdraw.

So what do people think of this? Have we really finished our job there or are we leaving due to political and economical reason. I find it hard to believe we have stabilised that part of the country and left it in a reasonable order for the Iraqi government.

UK troops to leave Iraq 'by July'

Gordon Brown: 'Our troops will be coming home'

Gordon Brown and Iraqi prime minister Nouri Maliki say UK forces will have "completed their tasks" and leave the country by the end of July next year.

The two leaders' joint statement came as they held talks in Baghdad before Mr Brown headed to Basra.

The UK PM praised British forces for making Iraq a "better place".

There are currently about 4,100 UK troops in Basra, southern Iraq. Between 200 to 300 military advisers are likely to remain after combat troops leave.

Mr Brown will make a statement to the House of Commons on UK troop deployment in Iraq on Thursday.

"I don't know why the government would have changed their mind and given such a specific commitment to dates.

"I'm sure that it's complete coincidence that it's done on the same day that we've got horrendous unemployment figures."

Whatever the reasons, people are always going to call it was due to the economy or Gordon trying to save his party.

People are going to complain regardless of intention of government. Thats the British way.

Right or wrong, great for the guys out there losing their lives for what seems a pointless and difficult cause. I'm sure the average taxpayers can stop complaining about throwing money away at a war too.

Because it's the truth.

Gordon Brown is a desperate, dangerous man willing to do anything to stay in power.

About time imo, although i bet it will be even more dangerous when we leave :/

See I don't get that view. What ever you think of the war and the reasons for going. Once we decided to go, surly you have to agree that we should stay until it's safe and secure and that the current government can maintain that state once we leave.

I'll complain even more. We went into Iraq when it was clear we'd messed up Afghanistan and couldn't cope there.

What's worse than spending billions on a war that costs hundreds of thousands of lives?

Spending billions on a war that costs hundreds of thousands of lives and not finishing the job.

i do but i dont think them being there now is actually doing anything for progression

Yay, and then we can sit back and watch the uncivilised barbarians tear themselves apart.

You could argue the same in the UK.

It is the right time to withdraw from Iraq. As a country it is more stable than it was post 2003 in terms of insurgency although attacks will never be stopped.

The Iraqi security forces are better than they were and able to deal with most things that come their way and 300 or so British military advisors will help improve them.

My fear though is that the 4,100 troops in Iraq will be channelled to Afghanistan.

yeah pretty much what i think, especially that last bit lol

I really fancied visiting Iraq too!

No really good stuff, our guys out there fighting to what some time seems like a losing battel.

They've already said due to economic climate, they will not be allowed to do a 1 for 1 swap and that they have to scale down forces in operation.

Afghanistan has been a base of terror operations for years and only a strong military presence can even begin to take on the Taliban. Couple that with around 90-95% of heroin on UK streets originating from Afghanistan and you have an inherent problem that needs dealing with.

If the UK will not send those extra troopes needed then more ISAF nations will have to.

You actually think we could lose against them? It's like putting terminator against cave men. Power of the press manipulating you!
