Just watched this on the News and thought it to be utter tosh about Fan's getting righteous about the whole situation.

If Alexandras version gets to No1 i couldn't really care as i will always think Jeff Buckley will have done the best version. only discovered Jeff Buckleys music recently and i'm loving it!

What do you think?

is it just another BBC hype?

It annoys me slightly that one of the greatest songs in history (imo) is being used purely as a money making tool. Sure loads of people have covered it, and some covers haven't been so great, but i'm sure the previous attempts were chosen by the artists themselves due to their own affection for the song. This was chosen by a bunch of suits and given to her as they knew it would sell as a good 'christmas song'. Obviously it isn't a christmas song, but they know the people who typically buy xfactor singles won't listen to the lyrics and won't realize how sad a song it is (adding to this is the cheery way in which it is delivered in the xfactor attempt).

That said, Leonard Cohen has recently been told the money that was effectively stolen from him by his producer (i think?) will not be returned. I'm sure the loyalties received from these sales will be a welcome Christmas bonus for him and for that i am glad. A truly fantastic artist.

Only thing that has really got on my **** is that someone yesterday claimed that the xfactor chick had actually written the song. Ugh.

[EDIT] It also annoys me that that goon with the attitude off xfactor (can't even be bothered to try and remember his name) has effectively chosen the past 3 years' Christmas no 1s, yet another thing for him to stroke his ego over.

Simon Cowell would be the goon.

The coverage on the news does seem hugely excessive as with all due respect to those involved it isn't an important story, it's just another money making cover. Buckley's cover is better, I'm happy to acknowledge that much but even with that done I don't like the song much.

I personally love the KD land version.

Look for the jools holland performance on later on youtube. Its magic.

Actually, yeah you're right... along with that other one who kicked the bucket, what's his name again? ;)

Kurt Cobain? ;)

If anything I think Elvis died too late, if he'd died when young and handsome (not fat and on the toilet) then I suspect he'd have been an even bigger legend than he is. Although as a general rule dying can be a fantastic career move, not for the person dying of course but their estate and managers can do very nicely out of it - simple rules here: a) die young, b) die with talent unfulfilled, c) die in tragic/bizarre circumstances, d) die handsome/beautiful (this one is arguably optional).

There's more than a grain of truth there. Priscilla, Elvis's ex-wife and self appointed guardian of the Presley legacy, has tried to plant the idea that Elvis died shortly after the ground-breaking "Aloha from Hawaii" concert in 1973 (The last time Elvis looked fantastic). In reality, Elvis lasted a further four miserable years, but to hear Priscilla and the other liars at Elvis Presley Enterprises you'd think that the Aloha was the last concert he ever did. They've blocked the official release of his later concerts on DVD for image reasons when legions of fans just want the concerts (however upsetting) in good quality.

But in terms of legacy, it would have been better if he had died shortly after January 15th 1973, because nobody could have mocked him at that stage.

But that's by the by.

It appears that it's cool to like the sainted Buckley. It's not cool to like Elvis, or Alexandra Burke for that matter.
