Hey everyone :]

I joined this forum a long time ago (say half a year) and i got some really *really* good advice from people hear about speakers.

i've tried looking for my old posts, but alas i think they've been pruned.

From what i remember though, someone told me that when in the future i do eventually buy some speakers, make sure i wire them up properly, because there can be several different ways of wiring them, and some methods are better than others. Something to do with a shared nutral or something if i can recall.

Anyway, that day has finally come (or rather, is soon about to come) as Santa (read girlfriend) has bought me some shiney new speakers :D
I bought her an amp to go with them... so.. yeah. Result. Two birds with one stone!

The speakers i got where a set of Mordaunt Short Mezzo 2 (or maybe Mezzo 6's, depending if she got her perents to chip in as well.. i'm not sure).

If i remember correctly, when i was last here i was wondering what sort of quality i would get from a set of Sony's or Bose speakers.
I remember being told buying Bose speakers is similar to kicking a puppy in a paper bag, hehe.

So yeah, i thought i'd het some decent ones.

And naturally, if i'm going to have good(ish) speakers i should get a good amp, so i got a Harmon Kardon AVR255 (.... for my girlfriend... ahem)

I chose both on reviews i'd seen on the internet, and what the bloke in RicherSounds told me i wanted. haha.

Now, even though there already bought, can someone tell me straight if i made a good decision here... It's never to late to ask for a swap if i pay shipping.
Are those decent speakers / amp? Will they work together okay?

Seond thing, i've got a PS3 for my BlueRay movies (well.. i only own 1, so it should be 'movie') and looking around for BlueRay players the PS3 is waaaaaay cheaper. There's got to be some kinda catch.

Would it be worth getting a proper BlueRay player? :/

That's basically all the questions and more i ever needed to ask, so thank you SO much if you reply to any of them!

Kind Regards,

~ John

I can only comment on the PS3 as I havent any experience with the others - I use it for Blue ray and find it works perfectly. Plays games too. The PS3 continues to amaze me as its such a little gem for my needs. You can also install Tversity on your pc and stream media from your pc, wirelessly, through to the PS3.

Big difference between a set of Mezzo 2 and 6s mate, one is bookshelf, the other floorstanders. both are great speakers though.

The amp you have picked looks nice, but there are models in its price range that are far better sounding and better specced. I would also go so far as to say its nowhere near good enough for those speakers either. They deserve something far better. They wouldnt be out of place used on a £800 stereo amp, let alone the AVR-255.

If you can swap the amp for a Yamaha DSP-AX863SE, it was £800 but has had its price cut to £600. It will run rings round the HK unit.

Just my 2 cents

Can an Arcam AVR350 still be had for 600 notes?

Dont think so, I know the 280 is still available for under £400 (was £1200!)

I have 2 systems at the moment, music and AV, im seriously considering selling my Roksan Kandy III amp, my front 3 Kef KHT3005 eggs, and my Yamaha AV amp. Then buying a 280 and hooking it up with my Monitor Audio GS10's and getting the matching centre.

It would destroy my current AV setup, im just wondering how much id lose music wise. I know it wouldnt be as good, but it should still be listenable

There's a place on the coast who's site says they have them in stock for 650 squids.

If I wasn't worried about being jobless any time soon I'd get one!

Ah, i can find the Yamaha DSP-AX863SE for as low as £500

I paid basically the same for the AVR255.

Is it definatly worth it? I saw the DSPAX863SE won WhatHiFi 2008.

Hehe, i don't mind sending it back... .. if i even can :/

I would say so, yes.

Of course you can, you have the right to change your mind.

Oh, and don't link to other sellers websites (in case it's a competitor) here it's not allowed. Have a look at the forum rules.

Yep send it back. I haven't listened to that specific HK amp, but iv listened to a few others, and they have all be a bit dull. Iv also ready a few very iffy reviews for it, no to mention a few tech issues/niggles it has mentioned on AV forums.

Did you swap it then?

I ended up buying a new AV amp myself. I was browsing and saw the Arcam AVR280 for £390

It was £1200 new, sure it cant decode the new HD codecs, but it has 7 channel inputs if you buy a player that decodes it itself you hook it up that way for HD audio. Cant seeing that being a problem, I have 1 bluray film anyway as opposed to 700 DVDs :p

the 280 would be a decent step down to your Roksan imo, the 350 would be quite a bit closer ....but all integrateds lack that mid punch and seperation you get from dedicated stereo amps.

Yep im sure it will be mate. The thing is I just cant remember the last time I sat down properly to listen to my stereo. I listen to music on my PC all day while I work, and use the AV most nights. In fact most of the time when I do listen to the hi-fi, its while im pottering around the house, or even in the garden, so im not really hearing the quality i paid for if that makes sense. and it just bugs me that I paid £800 for those GS10's and they get used once a month!

Ill give the AVR280 a good try and as long as it gets 75% out of the speakers that the Roksan gets ill keep it. if its not up to scratch ill just send it back. cant see me doing much work on Monday. some lengthy comparison test going on I feel :)

be interested to see how it fairs, i almost jacked in my Onkyo 805 and Arcam A90/P90 setup for a one box AVR-350 but decided against it in the end.

definitely ditch the KEF eggs and use the GS10's for movies though, they're too good to waste ;)
