Does anyone know if ffdshow works with Vista 64bit? I went onto the website and it looks like it only supports 32bit OS's. :(

I was using VLC player for watching all my movies but I just tried out WMP 11 and it seems so much smoother. VLC player seems to keep skipping frames and takes ages to fastfoward movies, etc.

What do I need to install to play all movies (inc HD content) in WMP11?

Note that Windows Media Center runs in 32bit by default unless you have changed it, even on a 64bit system.

No its the other way round. WMC runs in 64 bit by default on Vista x64, which is the reason you need a x64 bit compatible ffdshow installed. I believe it is possible to force it to 32bit but it's a big hassle.

Windows Media Player on the other hand runs in 32bit mode by default.

I use the codec pack from here: http://shark007.net/ with the 64-bit components.

Works perfectly, allows me to play anything in WMP and Media Center :)

I had problems wit the x64 K-Lite codec pack so I swapped to the pack Craig321 uses. So far it's been perfect with the sole exception of one film.

Thanks for the replies. I decided to download the K-Lite codec pack (which included WMP classic, ffdshow, haali, etc) and it's working perfectly - even though I used the 32bit version. I much perfer this setup to WMP11 and VLCPlayer.

I'm a bit confused about 32bit/64bit OS's. I thought that 32bit programs would only run on 32bit OS's and visa versa - is that not true?
Will all 32bit programs work on 64bit Vista? What is the actual difference?

I've only been using 64bit Vista for 2 days so it's all new to me. :)

Basically Vista x86 will run 16 & 32bit applications, while Vista x64 will run 32 & 64bit applications.

While Vista x64 is a true 64bit operating system, thanks to the fact you have a x86/64 CPU installed it's able to emulate 32bit apps with almost no performance loss.

I'm sure theres a better description out there somewhere, but thats the bottom line in a nutshell.

With Vista 64 both WMP and IE run in 32bit by default. Not sure what WMC is.

The 32bit version of ffdshow is better, more supported and more stable. Use it with MPC HC 32bit for the best combination.

Windows Media Center (the application you mentioned above) runs in 64bit on Vista x64. You can clearly see this by looking at task manager when you're running it and you'll see there is no *32 after the executables.

IE and Windows Media Player (which isn't the same thing as WMC) do run in x86 by default.
