If it were 1988, what cars would we be recommending?

"Spec me a 3k motorway cruiser"
"Spec me a sports car"
"Spec me a first car"
"10k to spend, what car?"
"£1500, what should I buy?"

Instead of "Mondeo" "BMW 530i" "Focus", what would be the alternatives? What would be the cliches?

Sierra? E28? Escort?
